Susan Matthew Slemmer, 89, of Upper Sandusky, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Fairhaven Health Care Community, Upper Sandusky.
She was born July 15, 1924, in Bucyrus, to Paul and Zilpah (Smith) Matthew. She married Charles L. Slemmer July 15, 1951. They later divorced, and he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Slemmer is survived by her daughter, Celia (John G.) Summers of Athens; son, Lewis C. Slemmer of Tiffin; seven grandchildren, Graylon, Zane, Sawyer and Summers, all of Athens, and Tyler, Hudson, Elle and Cora Slemmer, all of Tiffin; a sister, Molly Gamber of Upper Sandusky; and a brother, Paul Matthew of Seattle, Wash.
Mrs. Slemmer first attended Flora Stone Mather College from 1942-1944 and then received a bachelor of science degree in education from Bowling Green State University. She taught at South Euclid, Cleveland, and College Hill and C.A. Krout, both of Tiffin. She retired in 1987 after more than 40 years of teaching.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Tiffin. She was very active in her church, and was a member of the Penthouse organization in Tiffin. She was an avid bridge player, and adult reading tutor. She enjoyed traveling, reading, knitting, music, theater and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She supported any cause that benefited higher education.
Her memorial service will begin at 11 a.m Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Tiffin.
A private graveside service will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Upper Sandusky.
