ALLIANCE - Heidelberg came close in the first game, but Mount Union overpowered the Student Princes from there Saturday to claim the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament.
The Purple Raiders held off The 'Berg 31-29 in the opener before scoring wins of 25-14 and 25-18 in the next two games for the crown.
The teams shared the regular-season title with 8-1 marks in the OAC.
Amber Welfle, Sarah Parker and Jamie Kluding each drilled 11 kills to spark Heidelberg (18-15) in the tournament finale.
Alexa Frank tossed up 21 assists and Stephanie Romie added 11. Kluding recorded seven digs, and Grace Samenuk and Jubilee Haase both had six.
Heidelberg's Jason Miller claimed the OAC's coach of the year award.
Welfle was named the OAC player of the year.
Parker finished as a second-team OAC pick and Frank landed on the honorable mention list.
TU turns back Lake Erie
Chelsea Stockmaster lined 12 kills Saturday to fuel Tiffin University's 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Lake Erie.
Jordan Jenkins backed Stockmaster with 30 digs, marking her 45th consecutive match with double-digit digs.
Tiffany Buchinger tossed up 35 assists, Danielle McQuade registered 16 digs, Olivia Cobb belted 10 kills and Sarah Haman served three aces.
Dragons compete at regionals
KENOSHA, Wis. - Tiffin University's men ran a 10K and the women ran a 6K at the Midwest Regional Championships.
In the men's race Grand Valley State defeated Southern Indiana 53-64 to win the championship. Tiffin's men finished 20th with 527 points. Richard Roe led the Dragons finishing 73rd (33:30). Rounding out TU's top five were Kevin McKown 74th (33:31), Mike Grunden 110th (34:16), Joel Edwards 121st (34:31) and Seth Vermillion 149th (35:25).
In the women's race Grand Valley State won by 61 points over Saginaw Valley State. Tiffin's women took 19th with 460 points.
Ashley Gilroy ended 42nd (22:49) for the Dragons. Rounding out TU's top five were Jamie Lombardo 65th (23:10), Jessica Kern 110th (23:50), Jennifer Colone 111th (23:50) and Sam Smith 132nd (24:28).
