ALLIANCE - Heidelberg staved off two potential season-ending match points Friday en route to edging Ohio Northern in a five-game Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal.
Freshman Sarah Parker notched a career-high 25 kills and drilled eight blocks to help the Student Princes win 20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 19-17.
Senior Amber Welfle registered 22 kills and 22 digs for Heidelberg (18-14), which plays in the finals for the sixth time in the past seven years.
Today's 2 p.m. finals pit the Student Princes against Mount Union (29-4), which beat Otterbein 25-13, 25-22, 25-20 in the other semifinal.
Per OAC rules, the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament goes to the No. 1 seed if it advances to the conference finals. Since Heidelberg and Mount Union shared the regular-season co-championship, they will play for the automatic berth.
Stephanie Romie added 34 assists for Heidelberg and Alexa Frank tallied 30. Grace Samenuk came up with a team-high 32 digs.
Dragons edged late in OT
Saginaw Valley State's Lachlan Savage scored the lone goal with 24 seconds left in overtime Friday as the Cardinals beat Tiffin 1-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament soccer semifinals.
Tiffin (11-3-3) out-shot the Cardinals 18-8, but had just three shots on goal, and held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Jeremy Ashley had a save for Tiffin, with the winning goal bouncing around and over his head.
The Dragons must now wait until next week to find out if their season will continue in NCAA regional play.
