MOUNT BLANCHARD - Carey avenged a regular season loss to Hopewell-Loudon to win its second-straight sectional title. All three games were close, but each one went the way of the Blue Devils as Carey scored a 28-26, 25-23, 25-22 win in a Division IV sectional final at Riverdale.
A balanced offense paced Carey. Shelby Kin and Shelby Seifert each put down nine kills to lead the team. Sydney Wentling handed out 29 assists.
Defensively, four Blue Devils reached double figures in digs, led by Makenzie Wentling's 16. Taylor Fletcher and Claire Allison each added 11 and Logan Johnson picked up 10.
Courtney Burns and Kassie Shaver each posted double-doubles for Hopewell-Loudon (13-11). Burns slammed 11 kills and dished out 14 assists. Shaver had 10 kills and 10 digs. Shelbi Sauber added eight kills and 10 assists.
"The problem was, we didn't finish games when we needed to," said Hopewell-Loudon coach Krissy Lotycz. "We were up in each set, even to the game-point in the first."
Carey (16-8) advances to the district semifinals where New Riegel awaits Tuesday at Fostoria.
Mohawk moving on
MANSFIELD - It's a new environment for Mohawk, but the Warriors find themselves in a familiar spot. After two straight district titles in Division IV, Mohawk bumped up to Division III this year, but after a sectional final win against Wynford, the Warriors are back in the district semifinals.
Mohawk topped the Royals, 25-13, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21.
Mohawk coach Eric Hoover credited his team's defense with the win.
"Our defense won us the game tonight," he said. "We made a lot of great plays to keep rallies alive and find ways to win points on a night when our offense wasn't clicking real well. Aubrie (Flood), Taylor (McClain) and Clara (Adelsperger) really stepped up tonight when we needed them."
McClain led the defense with 42 digs.
Kasey Adelsperger led the offense with 16 kills and Julie Adelsperger chipped in 13. Clara Adelsperger tossed up 37 assists.
