Learn about the Heidelberg Catechism Sunday at 'Berg
Trinity United Church of Christ, 131 E. Perry St., is to host a presentation at 7 p.m. Sunday on the 450th anniversary of the writing of the Heidelberg Catechism. Robert Berg, retired German professor from Heidelberg and the current university archivist, is to share a brief history of how the catechism came to be and why it is called the 'Heidelberg' catechism.
Many German Reformed churches had a long tradition of using the Heidelberg Catechism for their confirmation of young adults into full church membership. Trinity church is a merger of Grace and First Reformed churches, following the flood of 1913. When the two churches merged, the catechism continued to be the basis for confirmation classes for many years.
Much of the history of the writing of the catechism reflects the ongoing struggles in Europe during the Reformation. Berg is to explain how the Heidelberg Catechism came to address those issues. Items related to the 450th anniversary are to be on display in the Resource Center.
