OLD FORT - Ammon Best booted home three goals in the first half Thursday to key Calvert's first victory, a 6-1 triumph over North Central Ohio Soccer Association foe Old Fort.
The Senecas (1-10-2, 1-9-1 NCOSA) halted a 24-game winless streak. Their last win came Oct. 17, 2011, in the first round 2011 post-season, when the Senecas beat Mohawk 3-1.
"This was a real good win for our seniors. Michael Bennett, Amanda Traxler, Zach Dutro and Zack Reinhart, they stuck with the program and it's a tribute to those kids," said Calvert coach Mike Fabrizio, who added his players dedicated the game to Ray Stearns, the Calvert High teacher who died earlier this week
"I felt like they dug down and gave a little extra for Mr. Stearns," he said.
Best snapped a scoreless tie off a penalty kick, then broke another tie with two more goals later in the period for the Senecas.
Fred Fabrizio, Drew Ronski and Hannah Mendoza each added a goal in the second half for Calvert. Ronski had the assist on Mendoza's goal.
The Stockaders got on the scoreboard on a John Lotycz goal.
Anthony Traxler halted four goals in net for Calvert, while Brad Heilman had 15 saves for the Stockaders.
