Raymond B. Stearns, 55, of Tiffin, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at his home.
He was born March 19, 1958, to Paul and Geneva (Hoover) Stearns.
Ray was a 1976 graduate of Defiance High School, obtained a BA degree from Muskegon College and a master's from Bowling Green State University. He taught in several school districts including Wayne Trace, Marion Harding, North Dakota High School, Green Springs, Ind., and Nashville High School, Nashville, Ind. At the time of his death, he was teaching at Tiffin Calvert High School where he spent the last 16 years sharing his love for his students while he guided them through the sciences and math. Ray was not only their teacher but their friend. At Calvert, he was involved with the National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl advisor and the best volunteer a school could wish for.
Ray will be greatly missed by his mother, Geneva Stearns of Defiance; three sisters, Rebecca (Larry) Simpson of Hager Hill, Ky., Rosemary (Ed) Ratajczak of Maumee and Rita (Reggie) Gehrke of Brooklyn, Minn.; two brothers, Robert (Connie) Stearns and Randall Stearns, both of Defiance; his nieces and nephews whom he loved as his children; and his beloved Calvert family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul, and his grandparents.
His funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, 1753 S. Clinton St., Defiance, OH 43512, (419) 782-0075, with the Rev. Mike Lashaway officiating.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today and before his funeral Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at a later date at Monroe Cemetery, Continental.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made, in his honor, to Tiffin Calvert High School.
