Local chef Wally Snow is to serve up his award-winning Great American Barbeque at the Tiffin Knights of Columbus, 49 E. Perry St., all three days of the Heritage Festival. His pulled pork was named the grand prize winner at the 2013 Ohio State Fair. It also won the Judges' Choice and the People's Choice at the Findlay Rib-Off.
Aaron Brady, who runs Dell's Restaurant in Fostoria, serves the pork and sauce from his menu seven days a week.
"Dad (Pat Brady) and Wally started it and I've been helping them since I was a kid," Aaron said. "They pass all the secrets down to me and I get all the work around for them. They taught me everything."
The trio started entering competitions in the mid-1990s, starting at the Fostoria Glass Festival and moving on to other contests around the state.
In 2012, Wally's barbeque won took three out of four first places for pork, ribs and sauce. This year, Wally served his fare at the Seneca County Fair in July and the Hancock County Fair in August.
"Everything is cooked out of Dell's, and we take it over there. With all my help, they let me use the barbeque at the restaurant. It works out," Aaron said.
A native of Findlay, Snow came to Tiffin in the 1970s when Pat Brady owned Napoli Pizza. Snow drove deliveries for Brady and they became close friends. That friendship has endured all this time, and the barbecue now brings people from all over to Dell's to sample the food.
"It really took off last year after we won three out of the four prizes," Aaron said. "It's brought a lot of people in. Dell's has been open 79 years now."
Those who miss out on Wally's barbecue in Tiffin can try it in Fostoria at 224 S. Main St. Aaron said Dell's has regular customers that have been coming in for years.
The restaurant also does catering for company picnics, parties and other occasions. It is to be open during the Fostoria Rail Festival Sept. 28.
