Lakota Volleyball

September 1, 2013
The Advertiser-Tribune

Coach: Sarah Lawrence, first year.

2012: 11-12, 5-6 MAL.

Returning letterwinners: Seniors Alaina Bickford (L); Makayla Kiser (OH, S); Kyleigh Harrison (DS); Alexandra Hovis (MH). Juniors Destiney Long-Meyer (MH); Khilee Baltz (OH); Katie Park (OH).

Others: Juniors Paige Alloway (DS); Paige Paxton (OH). Sophomores Bree Long-Meyer (OH); Aubrey Bickford (S); Aspen Ray (MH).

Outlook: The biggest goal is to get back to winning. Barring that, the Raiders want to go the distance against the best teams they'll face.

The rookie coach knows about that.

Lawrence, a 2007 Lakota graduate, played on the 2006 team that went 20-3 and captured the Suburban Lakes League crown. Now, after four years of coaching in the junior high, she takes over the program's top spot.

"It's different. I like it because some the girls who play now, I played with their sisters," she said. "Coming back is kind of different.

"Goals for them are to finish at least .500," she said. "The ultimate goal is to win, but to be realistic, against good teams, they want to go five games with them."

Getting there will start with the veterans.

Alaina Bickford returns after tallying 35 aces and 326 digs en route to MAL honorable mention honors.

Hovis (40 aces) and Destiney Long-Meyer (92 kills) also contributed heavily last year.

Lawrence said their leadership has continued this fall.

"We're coming along better than I hoped. They're getting into shape and coming along," she said.

"They're a great group of girls that work well together," she said. "The leadership from the seniors has come along pretty well."
