Duane E. ‘Pete’ Fry

Duane E. "Pete" Fry, 83, passed away suddenly Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at his home.

He was born May 3, 1930, in Bloomdale, Ohio, to Elmer and Ella (Kaiser) Fry.

Pete served in the U.S. Army from June 1946 to March 1951 and again in the U.S. Air Force from August 1951 to August 1955. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Pete married Irene Geldin, and she survives.

He was an operating engineer for Union Local 18 for more than 50 years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a member of Brainard Lodge, 32nd Mason, a lifetime member of VFW, a member of Bettsville American Legion and member of National Rifle Association. He enjoyed spending time with his family, sitting on the porch and supporting his grandsons in their interests and activities.

Pete is survived by his wife of many years, Irene Fry; daughter, Connie (Michael) Smith; three grandchildren, Justin C. Smith, Jacob Elmer Smith and Joshua M. Smith, all of Fremont; many loving nieces and nephews; and his loving dog, Barney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Norene Harpster and Janet Walter; and a niece, Jane Douglass.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont. His funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 3013, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 212 N. Clover St, Fremont, with the Rev. Joseph Lees officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Bettsville American Legion or Gideon Bibles.
