Carey schools' superintendent Mike Wank thanked staff and community members for welcoming him to the district at the board of education meeting Aug. 20. Wank told the board he appreciated all the hard work done to the building over the summer to prepare for the first day of classes.
In other matters, Wank explained athletic changes that will be brought on by House Bill 59. He said homeschooled and private school students now are to be able to participate in the districts' sports.
He said students must follow the same rules and eligibility requirements currently in place for the district.
Treasurer Karen Phillips gave the board an update on the new school building process. Phillips said bonds are set to be sold Sept. 5. She said architects are hopeful to have a design finished by late December and a design committee consisting of four teachers and principals is to be created to help with this process.
The board continued with approving the authorization to negotiate professional design services for a capital improvement project with Fanning Howey & Associates Architects.

Approved one-year teaching and non-teaching contracts.
Approved substitutes for the 2013-14 school year.
Approved supplemental contracts for the 2013-14 school year.
Accepted Jennifer Haught's resignation as varsity girls softball coach.
Approved bus routes for the school year.
Accepted school supplies donated by Stoneco, Wyandot Dolomite Plant.
Approved an FFA trip to Willard for a Greenhand camp Sept. 29 and 30.
Approved declaring transportation impractical for four students and approved to offer payment in lieu of transportation.
The board is to meet Sept. 24.
