A man was killed in a mushroom hunting accident near Bascom Saturday.
Seneca County Sheriff Bill Eckelberry said Kyle Tanner, 24, of Fostoria, and a friend were hunting mushrooms in a woods on CR 7. They got separated, and the friend found Tanner lying in the woods with an injury to the top of his head, Eckelberry said.
Eckelberry said it was unknown whether Tanner tripped and hit his head or whether something such as a large limb fell on him. There were limbs with fresh breaks in the area, he said.
Personnel were dispatched to the scene, located on the west side of CR 7, just south of US 224, at 5:48 p.m.
Eckelberry said Tanner was pronounced deceased at Mercy Tiffin Hospital. He died about an hour after arriving there, he said.
Detective Kevin Reinbolt of Seneca County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
Reinbolt, Deputy Christopher Potter, Bascom fire and EMS, and the county's Echo unit responded to the scene.
Life Flight had been on its way to the scene and was diverted to the hospital, a Seneca County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.
