GENOA - Genoa was fond of the big inning Friday against Hopewell-Loudon. The Comets plated three runs in three different innings in a 10-2 victory over the Chieftains.
The Chieftains were within 4-2 when the Comets came to bat in the bottom of the fifth. But three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth gave them breathing room.
Jordan Stewart and Tyler Imes had two hits for the Chieftains (2-5). Brian Scherger and Logan Tyree each had a hit and drove in a run.
Arrendondo helps Carey to third
VAN BUREN - Carey's Tommy Arrendondo won the high jump at the Doug Mowery Invitational at Van Buren, helping Carey's boys to a third place finish.
Elmwood won the eight team event with 197 1/2 points, outdistancing Arlington, which had 99, and the Blue Devils 96.
Arrendondo cleared 6-4 to win the event. He took second in long jump, in 19-0 1/4.
Newell, Wentling pace 2nd-place finish for Blue Devils
VAN BUREN - Dana Newell and Gwent Wentling each had first-place finishes, and Carey finished second at the Doug Mowery Invitational.
Host Van Buren won the event with 134 points, while Carey finished with 112.
Newell went 5-4 in the high jump, while Wentling took the 200 in 28.02.
Wentling won her event by seven-hundreths of a second.
