A Tiffin man was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, hit-skip and failure to control after he crashed his vehicle on Melmore Street Friday afternoon and left the scene.

Tiffin Police officer Steve Niedermier said Donald Chester, 64, had gone off the roadway in the 300 block of Melmore Street around 1:30 p.m., striking mailboxes, a power pole, a fence and street signs. Chester then left the accident scene and drove his vehicle to his residence on CR 16, according to reports.

Niedermier said the Seneca County Sheriff's Office assisted police in locating Chester at his residence.

Part of Melmore Street was closed Friday afternoon in order for AEP to repair the damaged power pole.
