Joanne M. Elchert, 85, of New Riegel, passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 14, 2013, at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.
She was born March 24, 1927, in Tiffin, to Albert and Lillian Hoffman. She married Cyril "Bud" H. Elchert April 19, 1947.
Survivors include two sons, David (Patie) Elchert of Virginia Beach, Va., and Gregg (Amy) Elchert of Clyde; a daughter, Julie (Roger) Commager of Maumee; and six grandchildren, Adele, Amanda, Alexandra, Kreston, Colin and Kelsey.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud; brother, Russell Hoffman; and four sisters, Mary Hart, Alice Huss, Norma DeMonte and Maxine Rumschlag.
Joanne graduated in 1945 from Calvert High School as class valedictorian. She retired in 1994 after 25 years as a postal clerk in New Riegel. She was a member of All Saints Parish and taught CCD there for years. Joanne was a member of the Women of the Moose, New Riegel, was a supporter of St. Jude's Children Hospital and donated altars to seminarians made by her husband. She enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, taking bus trips and collecting antiques.
Her Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at All Saints Parish, New Riegel with the Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery. A rosary will be prayed 15 minutes prior to Mass.
Friends may visit with the family from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17 at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-2424 and from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at All Saints Parish. A Christian wake service will begin at 4:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital or All Saints Parish.
