Johanna May Smith

February 3, 2013
dsp The Advertiser-Tribune

Johanna May Smith, 82, of Yuma, Ariz., and formerly Tiffin, joined the heavenly angels at 4:10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013.

Johanna was born Oct. 10, 1930, in Findlay, to John and Moleta Mitchell. She graduated from Findlay High School and married Robert P. Smith Jr. of Tiffin in 1950. Johanna traveled with Bob while he served in the U.S. Air Force for nine years, before settling in Tiffin, where they raised their four children.

Johanna and Bob moved to Yuma in 1982. Johanna, always a lover of adventure, bloomed in Yuma, opening "Johanna's Country Store" on Main Street, featuring handmade crafts from Amish country. She contributed to the life of the Yuma community in many ways from simply providing a "safe haven" for people who needed an ear, to her more formal activity in organizations like Christian Women's Club, Soroptimist, Garden Club and others. Johanna believed in the spirit of Yuma and the traditions of entrepreneurship. She especially enjoyed playing Mrs. Claus at Christmas.
