MANSFIELD - The defense clamped down in the second half and Calvert withstood a 3-point barrage and its own struggles at the line Friday as the Senecas upended Mansfield Christian 48-44, snapping the Flames' five-game win streak.
"Our kids grew up tonight. It was a good game for them on the road," Calvert coach Ted Willman said.
"We played well defensively in the second half, we only gave up 15 points," he said.
Mansfield Christian (6-2) opened the game on a 7-0 run, but Calvert trailed just 14-13 by the end of the period and 29-27 at halftime before pulling ahead 38-32 by the end of the third quarter.
The Senecas (2-7) maintained their lead by using defense to counter missing the front end of three 1-and-1 chances.
Jared Thompson's 15 points led the Senecas, with Brian Gruss tossing in 13. Austin Ball (8) and Mike Bennett (7) combined for another 15 points.
Bryce Ernsberger hit five 3-pointers en route to 17 points for the Flames (6-2), who went 8 of 27 on shots outside the arc. Ryan Smith added 11 points.
Wurm turns it on for Buckeye Central
NEW WASHINGTON - Buckeye Central took control from the start and got a double-double from Austin Wurm in Friday's 57-31 North Central Conference whipping of winless Lucas.
Wurm turned in 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Bucks (3-5, 1-1 NCC), who led 20-2 at the first stop and owned a 33-12 advantage on the boards.
Alan Niese scored another 11 points, and Stone Wurm and Dustin Snyder each hauled in five boards.
Thomas Schell netted 15 points for Lucas (0-7, 0-3), but no other Cub scored more than five points. Matt Smollen ended with six rebounds.
Warriors top Polar Bears
SYCAMORE - Mohawk roared out to a 30-point lead by the end of the first period and coasted from there Friday in a 78-38 domination of Hardin Northern.
Gunnar Johnson and Drew Loose each netted 12 points to lead four Warriors (2-3) in double-digit scoring.
Darby Walton added 11 points and seven rebounds, Loose grabbed eight boards and Mitch Parker netted 10 points. Grant Ekleberry (8), Devon Fredritz (7) and Tyler Boyd (6) combined for another 21 points.
The Polar Bears (1-7) got 18 points from Rylie Drumm and 13 from Hayden Bradley.
Rams roll Redmen
BUCYRUS - Joe Reile scored nearly as many points Friday as Bucyrus in Upper Sandusky's 41-24 North Central Conference victory.
Reile tossed in 23 points for the Rams (2-4, 2-1 NCC) and added three steals.
Trent Howard backed him with nine points and Carson Mittermaier grabbed eight rebounds.
Patrick Grog's 10 points paced the Redmen (1-8, 0-4).
Kicking Mules boot Raiders
SPRINGFIELD - By the time Lakota's offense got going, it was too late.
Bedford, Mich., vaulted out 24-5 in the first quarter and led 39-9 by halftime en route to a 70-36 win Friday in the Emmanuel Christian Warrior Classic semifinals.
Jackson Lamb tossed in 21 points for the Kicking Mules, Dennis Guss scored 10 and Brad Boss had nine.
The Raiders (2-6) got 12 points from Kody Brewer and nine from Josh Kirkpatrick.
McComb holds off H-L
MCCOMB - Hopewell-Loudon led McComb at halftime, 20-19, then watched as the Panthers took control in the second half and won, 42-33.
The Chieftains (5-3) scored just five points in the third quarter, and eight in the fourth. McComb (2-5) got 13 points from Clay Grubb and 12 points from Dalton Buck, scored 23 in the second half.
Hopewell-Loudon was led by Alec Gregg, who connected on three 3-pointers and had 13 points.
