Parks to honor top volunteer

Tiffin Park and Recreation Department is seeking nominations for its 2012 volunteer of the year.

Nominees should be people who have made a significant, positive difference through dedication to the community and the department.

Nominations should be received by Jan. 7 by calling (419) 448-5408, emailing recreation@tiffinohio.gov or stopping at 621 E. Market St.

District wants board members

Judge Jay Meyer of Seneca County Probate Court is considering appointments for a new member of Seneca County Park Board. Board member Russ Rife of Fostoria plans to leave the board.

Park board members are volunteers and are appointed by the judge for three-year terms. The board meets once a month at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday and for special meetings as needed.

The board is responsible for overseeing operations in the county's eight parks. The parks are developed and maintained primarily through the time and effort of volunteers.

Anyone interested in serving should send a letter to the park office, 109 S. Washington St., Suite 2003, Tiffin, or call the office at (419) 447-8091 by Jan. 15.

Science Days scheduled

Franciscan Earth Literacy Center on the St. Francis campus is planning a science mini-camp 8 a.m.-noon Jan. 2-4 on astronomy and the solar system.

Participants ages 5-10 can make a model of the solar system; explore galaxies, constellations, stars, comets and meteorites; plan a space adventure to the moon; and experience the life cycle of a star.

Cost is $30.

Tree recycling under way

As families prepare to take down Christmas trees, the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste District has gathered information on where to take them for recycling. Trees must be free of decorations and tinsel.

In Seneca County, trees may be taken to:

Tiffin, (419) 448-5430, (419) 448-5440 - Public Works building, 601 Miami St., through the end of January; and Water Pollution Control Center, 961 N. Water St., 7 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. seven days a week.

Fostoria, (419) 435-4115 - Fostoria Street Department, 1235 Perrysburg Road, Jan. 1-11; Meadowlark Park at the city compost area.

Bloomville, (419) 983-4745 - Ray and Janis Weasner home, 19 S. Prospect St., along the driveway.

Liberty Township, (419) 463-7829 - 4730 CR 11, through Jan. 15, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Christmas bird count planned

OAK HARBOR - A Christmas Bird Count for Kids is planned 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 12 at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, 13229 W. SR 2, Oak Harbor.

The program is designed for children ages 8-12 to get them outside to look at birds. Each youth will be a member of a small birding team led by an experienced birder.

Lunch is to be provided by Friends of Magee Marsh.
