Lester J. Spitler, 88, 7651 S. TR 17, Tiffin, Ohio , died at 9:42 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at Toledo Hospital.
Lester was born May 6, 1924, to Elmer and Emma (Goetz) Spitler. He married Opal E. (Hieber) Aug. 14, 1949, and she died April 25, 2002.
Surviving are the following children: Joyce Spitler of Niles, Barbara J. (David) Sander of Genoa and David J. (Barbara) Spitler of Tiffin. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jeffrey Thompson, Julie Thompson, Laura Mack, Christine Carlson and Rebecca Sander. Also surviving are three stepgrandchildren, Andrew Collar, Elizabeth Collar and Ben Collar. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Hieber of Chatfield.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Glenn Spitler, besides his wife, Opal, and his parents.
Lester was a lifelong farmer, farming on the same farm he was born on. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Tiffin. He was a 1943 graduate of Melmore High School. He was a former 4-H adviser for many years.
He also was a former member of Seneca County Farm Bureau and the former Eden Grange. He also served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy.
Funeral services for Lester will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, with the Rev. Pam Easterday officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore, where the Sycamore American Legion Post 250 will conduct a military graveside service. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at the funeral home.
