Fund needed to replace scene of tragedy

December 19, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

News of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday shocked the nation. Since then, the feeling of horror and helplessness has transformed into offers of sympathy and support.

An online national sympathy card garnered more than 1 million "signatures" within 48 hours (to sign, see www.causes.com/actions/

1715318). Already, funds to cover funeral expenses, counseling and other services for those dealing with the tragedies have been started (to give, visit

newtown.uwwesternct.org).

But we can do more to console the souls in Newtown, Conn., where students returned to school Tuesday. Sandy Hook remained a crime scene, and a state police official said months may pass before the school returns to the control of the school district. Even then, reopening of the elementary seems unlikely.

This is how America can come together to help. If the school district in Newtown would establish a fund for a new school, people across the country could contribute to replace the building. That would be a fitting tribute, and memorial, to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
