Vernon Dean Dreyer of Pittsboro, N.C., died peacefully at age 97 Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford, N.C.
Dean was born March 30, 1915, in Fergus Falls, Minn., one of six children born to Johann "John" and Annah Bryson Dreyer. Dean married Virginia E. Jones Jan. 20, 1940, in Ypsilanti, Mich., and she preceded him in death March 1, 2006.
Dean is survived by his son, Duane Dreyer of Durham, N.C.; three daughters, Joyce Baughman and Deborah Hinton, both of Pittsboro, and Carol Kendall of High Point, N.C.; four grandchildren, Lori Franklin, Scott Dreyer, Jon Baughman and Ben Kendall; three great-grandchildren, Eric Franklin, Ashlyn Kendall and Russ Dreyer; and two sisters, Doris Hedge of Tucson, Ariz., and Helen Trussell of Alberta, Canada.
Dean graduated in 1932 from Mt. Horeb High School, Wisconsin. He received on-the-job training in tool and die work and advanced to become a plant engineer and then plant manager for several machinery companies. Dean and Ginny moved to North Carolina in 1977 after his retirement. He was a past Master of Phoenix Masonic Lodge No. 13. His interests included woodworking, square dancing, restoring antique cars, and he was especially known for his storytelling.

A Masonic graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.
