County commissioners look to maintain county-owned buildings with help from Palmer Energy.
County Commissioners Association of Ohio hired Palmer Energy to help any county that wanted it at no cost to the county, Commissioner Jeff Wagner said.
"Once we received (results of a county study), we hired Palmer to manage the project," Wagner said. "It's approximately a $1 million worth of improvements, that will be a loan. But it's stuff we couldn't put off. The (heat, ventilation and air conditioning system) on the Board of Elections building is on its last leg."
Wagner said close to $200,000 of that $1 million is to come from 2012 Community Development Block Grant funding.
The company inspected the roofs on county-owned buildings and found ways to get five more years of use from them, said Earl Reid, of Palmer Energy.
He said the company also looked at HVAC, doors and windows of county-owned buildings.
Commissioner Ben Nutter said this project is to prevent county buildings from becoming unusable. He said money from energy savings is to be used to pay for the improvements.
"Obviously, here in Seneca County we have some good examples of when we didn't do that very well," he said. "So we wanted to make sure, moving forward, we didn't find ourselves in that situation again."
Nutter said commissioners also dedicate money every year to a fund specifically for building maintenance.
The commissioners also signed a proclamation honoring and thanking sheriff's Deputy William Herrig for his 31 years of service. Herrig died earlier this month.
