Bernard J. Thiel, 89, of Marion, passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Kingston Residence.
He was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Kirby, to Orbin S. and M. Bertha (Hunkle) Thiel. He was a self-employed farmer and previously worked for Bowen Implement. He was a World War II Army veteran.
He married Agnes E. (Gosche) Thiel May 29, 1948, and she passed away Nov. 12, 2009. Bernard was a member of St. Mary Church, Marion, a long-time church usher and Knights of Columbus member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and his portable sawmill.
Bernard is survived by four sons, John (Carol), Michael (Becky), Edward (Becky) and Donald (Denise); four daughters, Kathleen (John) Beckley, Marjorie (Barry) Simpson, Cynthia (Terry) Tremains and Rose (Brian) Hoffman; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren; one brother, Wilfred (Ruth) Thiel; five sisters, Loretta Kin, Mary (Jack) McDonald, Gertrude Baer, June (Jerry) McAllister and Elinor Thiel.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Eugene Thiel.
Family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors, Marion, where parish prayers will be at 2 p.m.
His Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at St. Mary Church, Marion, with Fr. Dwayne McNew officiating. Burial will follow at St Mary's Cemetery, Marion.
