Pheasants to be released tonight

About 150 ring-necked pheasants are to be released at Killdeer Plains Wildlife after shooting hours tonight to be available for hunting Saturday, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

Pheasant season is open through Jan. 6, with a daily bag limit of two male birds. Statewide hunting hours are sunrise to sunset.

Seneca County hunters took 803 deer during last week's deer-gun season, an increase of 200 from 2011, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

Statewide, hunters harvested 86,964 deer, a 3.7 percent decrease from 2011's 90,282.

Numbers also were up in area counties. In Crawford County, hunters took 543 (441 in 2011); Hancock, 558 (402); Huron, 1,006 (925); Sandusky, 224 (195); Wood, 254 (208); and Wyandot, 812 (661).

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer checked were Coshocton, 3,119; Muskingum, 2,927; Tuscarawas, 2,860; Guernsey, 2,620; Harrison, 2,370; Licking, 2,271; Washington, 2,163; Knox, 2,159; Belmont, 2,127; and Carroll, 2,062.

Hunters still have one weekend of deer-gun hunting Dec. 15-16, and archery season remains open through Feb. 3. Muzzleloader season is Jan. 5-8.
