Lois Margaret Poppenger Waldsmith

Lois Margaret Poppenger Waldsmith, 99, passed away Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Willow Brook Christian Home in Worthington.

Lois was born in Akron Aug. 20, 1913, the third daughter of the late Walter T. Poppenger and his wife, Bertha Getz Poppenger. She was a graduate of Akron's West High School and attended University of Akron.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Blanche Poppenger Suttkus and Grace Poppenger Baird; her loving husband of 55 years, Robert M. Waldsmith; and son, David Robert Waldsmith.

Lois was full of laughter, humor and life. She loved gardening, bird watching, nature and traveling, and was an avid stamp collector, continuing to add to her collection well into her 90s. She was an original member of the National Stereoscopic Association, served as the association's corresponding secretary for many years and received the organization's Meritorious Service Award in 1984 and again in 1999, after the honor was named for her late husband.

Also that year, Lois was named a life member of NSA, the only woman member to receive this recognition. She and her husband were active Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders, operated a general merchandise store near Orlando, Fla., and, in later years, resided in Worthington, Columbus and Sycamore. Before retirement, Lois was employed by J.C. Penney Co. at Graceland Shopping Center.

She is survived by her son David's wife, Patricia of Gulf Shores, Ala.; sons and their wives, John and Janet Waldsmith of Granger, Thomas and Judy Waldsmith of Tiffin and James and Marilyn Waldsmith of Westerville; seven grandchildren, Mark, Chris, Tim, Tom, Brad, Lesley and Jill Waldsmith; seven great-grandchildren, Ben, Ellie, Laura, Owen, Kate, Joseph and Isaac Waldsmith; and nieces and nephew, Margaret Baird, Carol Suttkus Rohe and Michael Suttkus.

Visitation and a memorial service will be Monday, Dec. 17, with visitation at 1 p.m., followed by a service at 2 p.m., at Rutherford Corbin Funeral Home, 515 High St, Worthington.
