FOSTORIA - A Fostoria Intermediate Elementary School fourth-grader died at a hospital Saturday, two days after being struck by a truck on Columbus Avenue.
Sgt. Don Pratt of the Fremont post of State Highway Patrol said Mavin Hamilton, 9, of Fostoria, died Saturday from his injuries.
Superintendent Steven Pritts said the entire district is devastated by the loss.
Andrew Sprang, principal of Fostoria Intermediate Elementary School, said the district received word of Mavin's death Saturday afternoon. He described Mavin as a great kid who was well-liked and well-respected by his friends and always was around other children at school.
Mavin is going to be missed, he said.
Sprang said there was a lot of concern for Mavin in the building Friday. People told children to keep him in thoughts and prayers, he said.
"We just tried to keep things as normal as we could. ... You always hold out hope ... until you know," he said.
Sprang said officials are going to try to maintain a normal school environment but offer counseling services so students can express their feelings. A crisis response team will meet this morning, he said.
Counselors will be at Fostoria Intermediate Elementary School, Riley Elementary School, where Mavin's younger sister is a student, and other buildings where needed, Pritts said.
The accident Thursday evening that claimed Mavin's life occurred after he ran out from behind a building.
George Tucker, 74, of Fostoria, was driving a 2006 Dodge Dakota pick-up southeast-bound on Columbus Avenue when Mavin ran southwest-bound across Columbus Avenue, according to a release from State Highway Patrol.
Mavin, who was struck in the middle of the road, was transported by Fostoria Fire Division to Fostoria Community Hospital and later was flown to The Toledo Hospital. Tucker was not injured.
The accident remained under investigation Sunday.
Pratt said no charges or citations had been filed as of Sunday morning. Law enforcement is going to confer with the prosecutor, probably this week, regarding possible charges, he said.
"(Tucker) had been drinking," he said.
