Janis L. Barba

Janis L. Barba, 71, of Tiffin, passed away Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11, 2012, at her daughter's home in Maumee.

She was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Tiffin, to Wilbert V. and Marian C. (McCracken) Briney. She married Roland Hudson April 18, 1961, and he preceded her in death July 20, 1988. She later married Fred Barba Oct. 25, 1991, and he preceded her in death May 10, 2012.

Survivors include a son, Rick (Zelka) Hudson of Glenwood, Md.; two daughters, Cheryl (Dan) Eyster of Selinsgrove, Pa., and Shelly (Rick) Ross of Maumee; three stepsons, Dave (Carol) Hudson of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Steven (Kristina) Barba of Sturgis, S.D., and Scott Barba of Forest; three stepdaughters, Rhoda (Dan) Holt of Lancaster, Stephannie Barba of Cleveland and Stacy (John) Corbin of Wharton; a brother, Jon W. (Sue) Briney of Powell; a sister, Jeanne (Mike) Petrosini of Oregon, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Janis was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Tiffin, and a 1959 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School. She received a bachelor's degree from Heidelberg College and a master's from Ashland University. Janis began as a substitute teacher in 1977 and in 1979 started teaching full time. She taught kindergarten and first grade at Clinton, Noble and Krout elementary schools for more than 28 years, retiring in 2007. After retirement, she continued as a substitute teacher from 2008-2011.

She was a member of the Y-Wives, enjoyed her bridge club, reading, crossword puzzles, listening to music, shopping, traveling and antiques. She spent as much time as she could at Lake Erie where she enjoyed boating. She also spent the month of March in St. Augustine, Fla., for many years.

Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Faith United Methodist Church, Tiffin, with the Rev. Donna VanTrees officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Tiffin, next to her first husband, Roland.

Friends may visit and share memories 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Hoffmann-Gottfried-Mack Funeral Home & Crematory, 236 S. Washington St., Tiffin, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tiffin City Schools, Faith United Methodist Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or American Cancer Society.
