Fostoria woman elected to WSOS director board

Tamara Turner of Fostoria recently was elected to the board of directors of WSOS Community Action Commission to represent Seneca County. Her term is to begin Jan. 1.

This is Turner's first term on the board and she replaces Tammie Wolfelt of Fostoria. Wolfelt served on the WSOS board for even years.

Turner, who was elected president of the Parent Affiliate of the Ohio Head Start Association Inc. earlier this year, also served as president of the Fostoria center's Parent Committee.

Turner's children participated in the Head Start program operated by WSOS in Fostoria.

"I feel honored to be able to represent the community on the WSOS board," Turner said. "It is really exciting to be able to do that."

Other members of the board representing Seneca County include Beverly Hemmerly-Lake of Tiffin, Paul Harrison of Fostoria, who serves as vice president of the board, County Commissioner David Sauber of Tiffin and Richard Focht of Tiffin.

'Babies and Books' at the library

The Tiffin-Seneca Public Library will be having its "Babies and Books" at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Frost Kalnow Room.

Registration begins Tuesday and is free.

"Babies and Books" features stories, rhymes, songs and finger plays.

Sessions of language enrichment classes for parents, caregivers and babies, age birth to 24 months also will be offered.

Library to co-host book group

Tiffin-Seneca Public Library and Bailiwicks Coffee Company will co-sponsor "Coffee by the Book: Book Group at the Wick."

The next discussion will be 6:30-7:30p.m. Nov. 15 at Bailiwicks, at 62 S. Washington St.

The goup plans to meet every third Thursday and focus on new authors and titles that avid readers may have missed.

Adult computer classes at the T-SPL

Tiffin-Seneca Public Library will be offering adult computer classes in December.

Space is limited and registration is necessary. The library charges $1 per class to be paid at the time of the class.

New courses at Columbian

Tiffin Columbian High School is offering new courses for the 2012-13 school year.

Practical mathematics and practical English courses are additions for students to be able to apply the basics of math and English in real-life situations.

One example is for students to set up their own checking accounts and a reading program to help build student's basic reading skills.

These courses are important to ensure students are prepared for the transition to life after graduation.

ABLE/GED classes offered at Sentinel

Registration has begun at Sentinel Career and Technology Center for ABLE and GED classes.

The next orientation is at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 244 of the Family Learning Center.

Classes are free for anyone 18 and older and is 9-11 a.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thrusday, 12:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

GED testing is available the first Tuesday and Wednesday of every month. Applications and a $40 fee are required to take the test.

Employment classes have begun

Registration for part-time Adult Workforce Development classes at Vanguard-Sentinel Adult Career and Technology Center has begun.

Registration must be done two weeks in advance. Without sufficient enrollment classes will be cancelled.

First aid and CPR training

FINDLAY - The Marily and Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute is offering first aid and CPR training 6-10 p.m. Thursday in the Hub at Birchaven Villiage, 15100 Birchaven Lane.

Certifications are good for 2 years and cost for the class is $60.

FOSTORIA - Kindergarteners from St. Wendelin Catholic School will be able to participate in a Kindergarten Pajama and Pancake Day 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Wendelin Catholic School in the foods lab.

One million meals

Members of New Riegel and Mohawk FFA chapters participated in the FFA Rally to Fight Hunger Oct. 24-26.

Members of the New Riegel chapter were, Spencer Hemminger, Hunter Hemminger, Marisa Lucius, Andrew Faber, John Zoeller and Brad Zoeller.

Students go to camp

SYCAMORE - Mohawk FFA sent 11 members to Greenhand Camp at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum in Carrollton.

Students who attended were Tori Chaney, Morgan Edgington, Cambria Kohlenberg, Joanie Lininger, Megan Ohl, Katie Pinkston, Logan Reinhart, Dominic Smith, Sara Spencer, Vanessa Stull, and Jordan Wheeler.

TU tailgate next weekened

Tiffin University's Sports Management Club and Athletic Department will host its first Football Tailgate and Community Day at 11a.m. Nov. 10 at the Heminger Center.

In the last game of the season, the Dragons will face Lake Erie at Frost-Kalnow Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m.

TU employees kick off campaign

Tiffin University began its United Way Campain, "You Can Be a Super Hero," Wednesday.

TU's United Way committee leader Lori Hall, vice president of Human Resources and Campus Services, encouraged TU employees to be "Super Dragons."

TU employees have raised $16,155, closing in on this year's goal of $18,000.

The campaign concludes Nov. 27.

Festivities, inauguration planned at Terra

FREMONT - For the first time in its history, Terra State Community College will celebrate its new president with a weeklong series of events.

The week will end with the official installation of Jerome Webster as Terra State's sixth president.

Activities open to the public include:

Thunder Showcase 6-8 p.m. Nov. 13. Experience Terra State's campus and explore the college's degree and certification programs. The evening includes demonstrations, activities, enrollment information, a battle of the bands and a chili cook-off.

Stand Down (veterans services) 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 14. In honor of veterans month, the Northcoast Jobs Connection Veteran Services team is planning a Veteran Stand Down to provide information, services and support to area homeless veterans.

"Service, Honor and Dedication," a celebration concert 7 p.m. Nov. 15. Featuring Terra Choral Society and Orchestra, Terra State Jazz Band, regional high school choirs and special guests, tributes and presentations.

Inaugural Ceremony 2 p.m. Nov. 16 followed by the Inaugural Community Reception at 3:30 p.m.

Former A-T editor on dean's list

Ryan Good, of Hesperia, Mich., made the dean's list and honor roll during the spring term at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich.

Good is a graduate of the University of Toledo and of St. Joseph Central Catholic School, Fremont, and a former news editor for The Advertiser-Tribune.

Good is the son of Jeff and Judy Good and son-in law of Tom and Mary Sturtevant.

Good and his wife, Christina Sturtevant-Good, have three children, Caleb, Aydan and Elaina.

Frankart makes dean's List

Austin E. Frankart, of Tiffin, has made The University of Northwestern Ohio dean's list for the August session in the College of Applied Technologies.

Three local students have made the dean's list from Marion Technical College for the summer term.

New scholarship opportunity at University of Findlay

FINDLAY - New students in fall 2013 and current students majoring in environmental, safety and occupational health management will be eligible to apply for five $2,500 scholarships.

Students are able to participate in a scholarship competition Dec. 8.

The scholarships are established by BP American and the BP Foundation.

The scholarships will be awarded to students based on availability and on certain criteria.

Local student drum major for Dayton

ATTICA -Former Seneca East student Jarrod Wurm is the University of Dayton drum major who helped conduct pregame and halftime music during the college football game versus Florida.

Seneca East "Tiger Pride Marching Band" was invited to the University of Dayton Sept. 22 to perform the halftime show with five other high school bands and the University of Dayton Band, "Pride of Dayton."

ATTICA -The Ohio State University Marching Band welcomes three former Seneca East band members.

John Phillips, a third-year trombone; Joshua Senn, a fourth-year flugelhorn; and Austin Willman, a third-year snare drum.

Senior health checks set

Seneca County General Health District is to sponsor a Senior Health Check 1-3 p.m. Nov. 14 at Kiwanis Manor, Tiffin. The health check is open to anyone age 60 and older.

Final bazaar next weekend

Fostoria's Hope Lutheran Church will host the 25th and final Olde Tyme Church Bazaar 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Sadly this will be our "going out of business sale." At 1 p.m., all white elephant items will go to $1 a bag. Items too big for a bag, will be greatly reduced.

The special Christmas tree will be there with baskets for the food pantry.

The bazaar features wood craft by Mike Harman and Al Duble, a coffee house, bake sale, Karen Harman's cookie walk, a toy room and a quilt room.

In the church is the "Country Harvest Kitchen," with lunch served 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

This year's proceeds will go toward Hope's electrical rewiring fund and Lutheran Social Services-Fostoria branch with matching funds from Thrivent Financial Chapter No. 31383.

Basket auction set

The Friends of Kaubisch Memorial Public Library is hosting a silent basket auction through Nov. 28. Money raised is to be used for a new computer and software for the children's department. There are 22 baskets on display at the library. There are a variety of baskets to choose from, including pet baskets, Christmas baskets, kitchen baskets, an Amish basket and more.

Patrons can view the baskets and bid on as many as they choose by receiving a number at the front desk. There will be a binder at the front desk with bid sheets for each basket. The sheets will have a picture of the basket, a list of the contents and retail value, along with some space for bidder number and amount.

Baskets will be on final display in the McClean room from noon-7 p.m. Nov 28 with bidding concluding at 7 p.m. Winners will be notified by phone or email.

Mercy Tiffin awards staff and trustees

Mercy Tiffin Hospital's annual Recognition Banquet was Sept. 27.

This banquet celebrates and recognizes members of the Mercy Tiffin medical staff and board of trustees who have significantly contributed to the success of the organization. Physicians are recognized for medical staff membership in increments of five years and board members are recognized for each three-year term of service they have completed.

Medical staff members recognized for years of service included:

5 years of Service: Raheel Jamal, MD, pulmonology, and Mark Naddaf, MD, pediatric gastroenterology.

10 Years of Service: Matt Akers, MD, plastic surgery; Punita Kothari, MD, pathology; and Mohamed Salem, MD, general surgery.

15 Years of Service: Joel Consolo, DPM, podiatry.

20 Years of Service: Dipakkumar Amin, MD, family medicine, and Wesley Hedges, MD, obstetrics and gynecology.

25 Years of Service: James Tita, DO, pulmonology, and Rudolph Vela, MD, family medicine.

During this event, Paul Clark, a vascular surgeon who practices with the Mercy system in Toledo was recognized for his years of service to Mercy Tiffin and the Tiffin community.

Mercy Tiffin Hospital Board of Trustees members also were recognized.

Jeannine Curns and Lee Martin, Mercy Tiffin board of trustees, were recognized for their 3-year terms of service from 2009-2012.

Chris English and Will Heddles, Mercy Tiffin board of trustees, were recognized for two 3-year terms of service from 2006 -2012.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Physician Excellence Award to Dr. Paul Clark. He was nominated by Lori Myers, manager of outpatient services and specialty clinics, and the Mercy Tiffin Outpatient and Specialty Clinic team.

"This year, eight excellent nominations were received for the Physician Excellence Award, each one compelling in its own right," said Nichol Hohman, manager of physician development and medical staff relations at Mercy Tiffin Hospital. "The physicians at Mercy Tiffin are regarded with great fondness and respect. The Physician Excellence Award allows Mercy Tiffin to publicly recognize these fine dedicated healthcare providers and recognize them for their academic, clinical and humanitarian efforts on behalf of our hospital and the community."

Grieving programs begin this week

Stein Hospice's annual Hope for the Holidays is to take place at various locations throughout November, The event is free and open to anyone who is grieving or experiencing loss. The program includes informative and encouraging presentations by the Stein Hospice bereavement staff.

Wheat, apples, grapes acreage reports due at FSA

USDA's Seneca County Farm Service Agency has announced the final date to report fall-seeded crops such as wheat and barley is Dec. 15. This is a major change in the acreage reporting date for wheat so producers are encouraged to contact FSA to schedule an appointment to report their planted wheat acreage as soon as possible.

Producers that participate in crop insurance are reminded to report the same acreage to FSA and the crop insurance program to avoid discrepancies.

Apple and grape producers are required to report acreage to FSA by Jan. 15, which also is a major change from previous years.

Failure to report crop acreage by the reporting deadline may cause loss of program benefits. Most farm programs administered by FSA require producers to report crop acreage including the Conservation Reserve Program, Marketing Assistance Loans and Non Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program.

USDA's Farm Service Agency is accepting applications for signup for the 2011 Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program through June 7. The SURE program provides payments to producers when crop revenues are less than the crop guarantee. The payment is equal to 60 percent of the difference between the crop guarantee and revenue.

To determine the program guarantee and revenue, crops on all farms for a producer are included in the calculation. Payments are limited to $100,000.

To be eligible, producers must have crop insurance on all insurable crops. For crops not covered by crop insurance such as pumpkins and cucumbers, producers must have purchased Non Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program coverage at FSA. The crop Insurance and NAP purchase requirement is waived for crops not economically significant to the farming operation.

In addition, to be eligible the producer must have at least one crop with a 10 percent production loss.

Producers' crop insurance information is provided electronically to FSA and is used to calculate possible payment.

A form must be filed at the office to apply.
