ATTICA - Police Chief Keith Turner told council members Thursday night another vehicle has been located to serve as the village's second cruiser. A 2006 Chevrolet Impala that has served New London's department has become available and Turner was authorized to make an offer.
After examining the cruiser, Councilman Jeff Painter reported the vehicle needs new tires and brakes, plus a general maintenance tune-up.
Turner also reminded citizens to lock all doors and remove keys from parked vehicles. He said anyone who observes unusual happenings should contact the police department at (419) 426-3621.
Fiscal Officer Pat Krebs told the council department heads have done a good job holding down costs this year to stay within budget. She said they have been compiling 2013 appropriation numbers and requested a meeting with the finance committee preceding the regular council meeting Nov. 8. With the loss of $30,000 in local government funding over the last two years, she said they have made cuts in order to sustain a positive cash balance.
Due to dry conditions last summer, Water Superintendent Gary Weis reported the village sold so much water he suggested the village waive a scheduled 3-percent increase in the consumer consumption rate in January for one year. Council agreed and Solicitor Rick Palau is to draw up an ordinance to that effect.
Village Administrator Greg Martin said the water/sewer committee met prior to the council meeting to review and rank resumes for an engineer for the wastewater treatment plant project. Makeever and Associates scored highest and council awarded the firm the contract. Detailed plans for the plant must be submitted to Ohio EPA by May.
Martin said he continues to work with Roberta Costa on an application for the Water Pollution Control Loan Fund and a principal forgiveness loan for the sewer project which must be completed by Nov. 8.
A pilot study testing trihalomethane levels in the water is being conducted by engineer Marvin Gnagy joined by Weis.
The meeting moved into executive session for discussion of land acquisition.
In other action, the council:
Heard all funds contain a total of $657,574.67.
Discussed the structural condition of the Eagles building.
Learned trash receptacles now are located in the central park, purchased with recycling proceeds.
Granted permission to the AVR Joint Fire District to refurbish a bell at the Myers Park time capsule.
Heard Painter thank Bernie and Sis Stockmaster for their assistance during the farmers' markets.
Council is scheduled to meet next at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8.
