Sectional volleyball roundup

The Advertiser-Tribune

MOUNT BLANCHARD - Mohawk coach Eric Hoover said he was looking for a few things from his team as it opened the 2012 postseason with a sectional final match against Hardin Northern.

"We wanted to play a solid game and eliminate some careless errors," Hoover said.

The score would indicate the Warriors did just that, dropping the Polar Bears 25-8, 25-7, 25-10.

The Warriors (21-2) will advance to the Division IV district tournament, where they will face Midland Athletic League rival Calvert, which dispatched St. Joe in its sectional final in Bascom.

The Warriors were able to spread things out attack-wise, getting 14 kills from Sarah Parker, nine from Kasey Adelsperger and eight from Julie Adelsperger. Aubrie Flood (4) and Clara Adelsperger (2) also contributed.

"We were able to move the ball around and everybody had a good game attacking the ball," Hoover said.

Julie Adelsperger added eight digs, two blocks and three aces, while Ashley Parker registered 15 digs and Lynsey Trusty had 10.

In addition, Ashley Parker dished out 37 assists and a block.

Sarah Parker lined four blocks and two aces for Mohawk, with Kasey Adelsperger adding four blocks. Clara Adelsperger had two blocks and an ace.

Hoover said he's expecting an exciting match Tuesday when the Warriors face Calvert. Mohawk won the regular-season league match between the two.

"They're gonna be ready to go, that's for sure," Hoover said. "We got them at the end of the year, I'm sure they want to get us back.

"It's gonna be an intense game, there's no question about that."

Buckettes roll into district semis

ONTARIO - Buckeye Central has lost only two matches this year, and appears to be getting stronger by the match.

The Buckettes (22-2) sliced through Crestline in the Division IV sectional finals Saturday, sweeping the Bulldogs 25-3, 25-8, 25-15.

BC advances to the Willard district, where it faces Monroeville Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Sammi Marcum led the way for the Buckettes with 10 kills, six aces and 10 digs, while Maddie Williams had four kills, four aces and 12 digs.

Jenna Delarber smashed eight kills for Buckeye Central, while Emily Weithman had 17 assists, four kills, three aces and five digs. Hailey Hildebrand added seven digs, three aces.

Blue Devils battle into district

MOUNT BLANCHARD - It's been four years since Carey last reached the district tournament. Saturday's sectional final only seemed to last that long.

Hannah Tong belted 21 kills, Sydney Wentling registered a double-double and two teammates combined for 56 digs as the Blue Devils outlasted Arlington 25-17, 21-25, 28-30, 25-23, 15-10 in a Division IV final.

"We've been in a lot of matches like this this year, our conference prepares us for it," Carey coach Eric Vackert said.

"Hannah Tong held us together. We have a very young team and we had some unforced errors," he said. "She kept us together."

Tong added five blocks and an ace for the Blue Devils (14-9), and Wentling had 43 assists, 22 digs, two aces and two blocks.

Logan Johnson backed them with 35 digs and three aces, while Mackenzie Wentling came up with 21 digs as Carey advanced to Tuesday's 6 p.m. district semifinals at Findlay High against New Riegel.

Shelby Kin hammered 11 kills against the Red Devils (17-7), Lauren Wenner drilled six kills and Adrienne Hackworth and Taylor Fletcher both served two aces.
