TU, ’Berg provide boost to economy

October 16, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

The two institutions of higher learning in Tiffin continue to be a bright spot for the local economy.

In addition to the academic opportunities afforded to students by Heidelberg University and Tiffin University, the two institutions provide a boost to the city. And at a time when enrollments are declining statewide, Heidelberg and TU are bucking the trend and experiencing increases in enrollment.

Consider the population of Tiffin is close to 18,000. The universities have more than 3,000 students enrolled - and a strong number of them come here from outside the county. That means our county seat sees the number of people who live here increase significantly during the academic year.

That is an influx that can be leveraged by community development groups for the benefit of the students and full-time residents. Most communities would be thrilled to have a tenth of that number visiting on a daily basis.

We hope the investment the universities have made at their campuses continues to pay off - for the students, the institutions and the greater community.
