The City of Tiffin Architectural Board of Review denied a proposal by a vote of 4-0, to put up a billboard sign at 300 S. Washington St.
John Siegenthaler, president of Lind Media Co., proposed an off-premise sign in front of Surf 'n Turf, which would consist of a sign for the business as well as an advertisement billboard.
The proposed billboard would have an old fashioned look to go along with the historic district of downtown Tiffin, Siegenthaler said.
Members of the board agreed the proposed location of the sign was not ideal.
John Huss, chairman of the board, said he was worried that approving this billboard would lead to more billboards in the downtown area.
"If we start allowing billboards, we're going to have billboards all over the parking lots and it concerns me because I think it's too much visual clutter," Huss said.
Board member Theresa Sullivan said the billboard would also be competing with St. Joseph Church.
"That doesn't out shout, that out screams," she said.
Siegenthaler and Lind Media can either appeal to the Zoning Board of Appeals or come back to the board of review with another proposal with a compromised solution, Huss said.
