Grant meeting planned
FREMONT - A third-round grant meeting is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Solid Waste District office, 1875 E. State St., Fremont. Registration is required to attend.
OSS is to offer grants in the third round of the competitive funding program for this year. Eligible participants are required to attend a meeting prior to submitting an application
The grant program's main priority is to set up recycling programs for educational institutions, non-profit organizations, townships, cities and villages in Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties.

Local group to host gun show
Sandusky River Coon Hunters is hosting a gun show 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 29 and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 30 at the clubhouse, 7325 W. TR 131, next to Walnut Grove Campground.
The show is to feature guns, knives, hunting clothes, fishing supplies, archery equipment and other outdoor gear.

Equestrian poker run slated
BLOOMVILLE - Tiffin University Equestrian Team and Seneca County Park District are sponsoring the fourth annual equestrian poker run/walk Sept. 29 at Garlo Heritage Nature Preserve, south of Bloomville on SR 19.
Registration is at noon and the run begins at 1 p.m. Fee is $10 per rider and $5 per walker.

Deer archery season coming
COLUMBUS - About 205,000 bow hunters are expected to participate in the statewide archery deer hunting season opening Sept. 29, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
During last year's four-month archery season, bow hunters harvested 82,732 deer, a decrease of 3 percent from the previous year.
Deer hunters are required to have a valid hunting license and a valid deer permit. This year, the $15 antlerless deer permit will be valid Sept. 29-Nov. 25 in zones A, B and C. The $15 antlerless permit may be purchased until Nov. 25.
Archery season remains open through Feb. 3 including the week of deer-gun season Nov. 26-Dec. 2 and Dec. 15- 16.

Birding event this weekend
Erie and Ottawa counties are hosting Lake Erie Wing Watch Family weekend Saturday and Sunday for people who like birds and nature and like to be outdoors.
Most events are free, but some require registration.
There will be multiple events going on at various locations in Erie County: Back to The Wild, Old Woman Creek, Erie Metro Parks and Kelleys Island; and Ottawa County: Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and at Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island.

Applications for beaver, otter hunts taken through Oct. 15
COLUMBUS - Beaver and river otter trapping on public land requires a special permit, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife. Controlled trapping opportunities on 75 wildlife areas, state parks and other publicly managed lands statewide are to be awarded through a system of random drawings.
Applicants may apply online or print an application and mail it with fees, and applications may be obtained from district offices.
The application period is to be Sept. 15-Oct. 15. Fee is $3 per event. Trappers may apply for each event once annually.
