NEW RIEGEL - Bid specifications for New Riegel's sidewalk project may be picked up today from Seneca Regional Planning Executive Director Jill Griffin. A $22,000 Community Development Block Grant is making it possible for the improvements. Bids must be submitted by Oct. 3, with the contract awarded Oct. 5.
Following a street committee meeting Tuesday to determine the specifics for a $100,000 Issue I grant, members are to meet with officials Sept. 26 to discuss the village's application. Their share of the resurfacing project of North and South Perry Streets totals $30,000.
Seneca County Commissioner Ben Nutter attended the meeting to explain why New Riegel did not qualify for grant funding refused by Republic.
He went on to discuss the casino revenue stream where counties receive 51 percent of the proceeds but no provision was made for villages to receive any of the funds. A future proposal may dedicate 75 percent of Seneca County proceeds to the improvement of the county court system used by all citizens.
Tree committee chairperson Deirdre Bakies reported the park wildlife area is next on the agenda for the US Fish and Wildlife Agency. Jeff Finn is to start backhoe work and add gravel for pathways soon.
Councilman Les Staib, serving as village liaison on the county mitigation team for emergency procedures, said the next meeting is Sept. 26.
Fiscal Officer Jackie Honaker submitted the appropriation status and cash summary by funds as of Aug. 31.
Street worker Jerry Faeth said catch basins were repaired and the streets have been swept. The snowplow has been serviced and the park restrooms winterized. The municipal building roof is to be painted this year yet and winter salt will be purchased soon.

Approved hiring A&D Tree Service for cutting 30 trees plus stump removal for $5,654. Homeowners have 48 hours to claim the wood then any resident is welcome to pick it up.
Approved paying Kusmer and Associates a $1,600 engineering fee for the sidewalk project.
Approved suspension of pay for a special meeting.
Approved paying half of the fees and mileage for Honaker to attend the auditor's conference in Perrysburg Oct. 4.
Heard leaf pick-up begins at 8 a.m. Mondays starting Oct. 1. Leaves should be bagged and placed at curbside.
Heard Police Chief Steve Swartzmiller has passed his weapons qualification.
Heard the park is to be sprayed this autumn.
Set the Halloween parade for 2 p.m. Oct. 28 with trick or treat to follow. The parade assembles at the American Legion Hall and marches to New Riegel School.
Council is to meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16.
