NEW RIEGEL - It took New Riegel just four total games to win it's own tournament Saturday, besting Fostoria 25-6, 25-7 in the semifinals, and Fremont St. Joe, 25-14, 25-15 in the championship game.
Kara Scherger excelled on both sides of the net for the Blue Jackets, slamming 20 kills while coming up with 21 digs defensively. Taylor Arbogast added 16 kills to go with 21 digs while Lauren Ladd had 15 kills and four blocks.
Cassandra Acree set them up to the tune of 42 assists, while also coming up with 14 digs. Alexis Kieffer had four kills, Morgan Noftz had six assists and Brittany Gillig added eight digs.
New Riegel remains unbeaten, improving to 11-0 on the season.
Mohawk slams Galion
GALION - Sarah Parker and Kasey Adelsperger each slammed 17 kills in Mohawk's 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 victory over Galion. Adelsperger also had five blocks and Parker eight digs.
Julie Adelsperger chipped in seven kills, five blocks, three aces and two digs. Ashley Parker delivered 35 assists to go along with 12 digs.
"We made some uncharacteristic errors on offense, but made up for it by really picking up our defense today," Mohawk coach Eric Hoover said.
Lynsey Trusty had 15 digs, Taylor McClain had 11 and Clara Adelsperger had seven.
Mohawk improves to 7-1.
Tong sets record in Carey sweep
CAREY - Carey swept a pair of matches in a triangular against Arlington and Riverdale, on a day highlighted by Hannah Tong becoming the school's all time ace leader. Tong served three aces on the day, giving her 131 for her career, passing the mark set by Lauren Jacoby, who played for the Blue Devils from 2007-10.
The Blue Devils dispatched of Arlington 25-10, 15-25, 25-19, and Riverdale 25-11, 25-14. Arlington beat Riverdale in two in the day's other match.
Along with once again putting her name in the school's record books, Tong slammed 14 kills and had 11 blocks. Shelby Seifert chipped in 14 kills, two blocks and five aces.
Also for Carey (7-3), Sydney Wentling dished out 30 assists and had five aces while Makenzie Wentling had 12 digs and three aces. On the defensive end, Logan Johnson had 12 digs and Taylor Fletcher had 11.
Mohawks split a pair
FOSTORIA - St. Wendelin split the day hosting a tri-match with Van Buren and Elmwood. The Mohawks downed Van Buren 25-21, 21-15, 25-17. Catrina Lang had 10 kills and Colleen Fondessy added eight in the victory. Allie Rutter served seven aces while Meghan Reiter had four, to go along with her 11 assists.
Defensively, Becca Starn had five blocks.
St. Wendelin then fell to Elmwood 25-15, 25-22. Fondessy led with 10 kills while Reiter dished out nine assists. Starn had nine blocks.
St. Wendelin now sits at 3-6 on the season.
Rough day for Old Fort
LIMA - Old Fort went 0-3 Saturday at the Lima Bath Invitational. The Stockaders fell to defending Division IV state champion St. Henry 25-12, 25-16, Orrville 25-19, 25-18 and Bryan 25-17, 25-18.
On the day, Kristin Bender led the Stockaders with 23 kills and seven blocks. She also tallied 16 digs. Krista Ward added 20 assists and 15 digs. Sammy Miller led Old Fort with 19 digs, Shelby Bigler chipped in 15. Sam Hartsel had six kills.
BC takes own invite
NEW WASHINGTON - Buckeye Central went 3-0 at it Fall Classic Invitational, scoring wins over Bellevue (25-9, 25-15), Monroeville (25-16, 25-27, 25-17) and Lexington (25-17, 25-15).
BC's Maddie Williams, who had 11 aces, 32 kills and 34 digs on the day, and Sammi Marcum, who had 34 kills and 34 digs, made the all-tournament team.
Brooke Karl had 35 digs for the Buckettes (11-2), while Emily Weithman had 54 assists, eight aces, nine kills and nine digs.
Lexington's Jenny Payne, Willard's Laura Danhoff, Monroeville's Brea Kramer also made the all-tournament team. Shelby's Devon Murray was named the most valuable player.
Calvert also competed at the tournament. Its results were not available.
