Bowen re-elected to conservation board
More than 130 people attended the Wyandot Soil and Water Conservation District's annual meeting, where Jeff Bowen was re-elected to serve on the SWCD board of supervisors. The banquet meeting was at the Master's Building on the Wyandot County Fairgrounds, with Deb Rellinger also participating in the election.
Pitt Township farmer Don Wilson received the Conservation Farmer of the Year award.
The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program award went to Ronald, Roger and Vaughn Collins for the construction of a large wetland complex.
Eileen Kuenzli was honored for 15 years of service, and SWCD board members Bowen (5 years) and Dal Heckathorn (10 years) were recognized for their service.
Lindsay Riedlinger received the Lowry scholarship. Bonnie and Forest Graver were honored for volunteering at the Gottfried Nature Center.
SWCD education specialist Angie Ford gave a presentation on district activities.
Plaques were provided by Ag Credit. Several local businesses donated door prizes.
Aging group names Outstanding Senior Citizen
MANSFIELD - During a ceremonty Aug. 20 in Mansfield, the late Nancy Owen of Tiffin was named the Outstanding Senior Citizen for Seneca County. Her daughter, Debi Nichols, accepted the award.
Owen was recognized for her involvement with several community organizations, including the Seneca County Commission on Aging, parent-teacher organization and school athletic and music boosters, Autumnwood Care Center, Green Springs Ladies Auxiliary VFW 6067, Women of the Moose 1001, and Board of Elections.
Owen was a life-long member of St. Mary Church, Tiffin.
The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging has been honoring senior citizens from each county since 1976.

FREMONT - The Hayes Presidential Center offers a class specifically designed to people find their Ohio ancestors. Head Librarian Becky Hill is instructor for Searching Your Ohio Roots, which is 9:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 15 in the Hayes Research Library and is sponsored by RootsMagic Inc.
Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students through high school.

Old Fort Bank raises $3K for Gillmor foundation
Michael C. Spragg, president and CEO of The Old Fort Banking Co. and chairman of the Paul M. and Lucy J. Gillmor Charitable Foundation announced Old Fort Bank's first annual fundraising efforts. A rummage sale was July 21 at Old Fort High School and resulted in $3,000 being raised for the Gillmor Foundation. The check was presented to the foundation by event organizers and Old Fort Bank associates Dee Blackburn (head of retail banking) and Kristy Vaughn (executive assistant).
The Paul M. and Lucy J. Gillmor Charitable Foundation works in partnership with local non-profit organizations, funding agencies, businesses, volunteers and donors to invest in creative solutions that make a meaningful impact in people's lives.
Dianne Gillmor-Krumsee, daughter of PM and Lucy Gillmor, carries on the Gillmor family values and leadership as she serves as chairwoman of the board of The Old Fort Banking Co. as well as a trustee of the foundation.
Adult computer classes offered
Tiffin-Seneca Public Library has announced the schedule for October adult computer classes. Fourteen classes will be offered, including a new class for job seekers.
Registration is necessary. Space is limited, and the cost is $1 per class to cover copy costs, which must be paid by the time of the class.
"Searching the Internet" is 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 3, and is to teach students how to search the Internet and formulate searches using Google. Students must be familiar with how to use a mouse and the keyboard. Basic navigation skills learned in the Beginning Internet class are recommended.
"Intermediate Word" is 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and is to review the fundamentals of Microsoft Word as well as teach about templates, formatting, working with graphics and tables and other topics. It is important that students have a basic knowledge of Word before taking this intermediate course.
"Intro to Excel" is 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 10 and is to teach the basics of the spreadsheet program Excel. Students are to learn how to set up an address book and create a simple checkbook. Students must be familiar with how to use a mouse and keyboard.
"Facebook Basics" is 2-4 p.m. Oct. 10 and is to teach about privacy settings, how to navigate in Facebook, find friends and businesses and how to upload pictures. Students must have an accessible Facebook account, know their password and be able to navigate the Internet.
"Tools for Online Job Seekers" is 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 11 and is to provide a tour of the Job & Career Accelerator and the Workplace Skills Improvement section of Learning Express Library. LinkedIn is to be discussed. Students must be familiar with the Internet or have taken Beginning Internet.
"eLibrary" classes are 10-11 a.m. Oct. 15 and 6-7 p.m. Oct. 23. "eLibrary" is TSPL's new online library catalog. This class is to show students how to search the catalog, edit patron accounts, place holds, create a temporary list and a My List. Students should bring their library cards (with PINs) to class. Students must be familiar with how to use a mouse and the Internet.
"Intro to Publisher" is 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 16 and is to teach the basics of the desktop publishing program Microsoft Publisher 2007, and how to use basic Publisher tools such as text box, picture frame and templates while creating and saving a document. Students may wish to bring a USB flash drive to save documents. Students must be familiar with how to use a mouse and the keyboard.
"All About Digital Photos" is 6-8 p.m. Oct. 18. Students are to learn how to save, transfer, organize, and share digital photos. Students will observe a demo that reviews these topics and, time permitting, will explore additional subjects. Students must be familiar with using the Internet, email, and attachments.
"Mouse 101" is 1-2 p.m. Oct. 23 and is to teach patrons to use a mouse, including distinguishing between left and right clicking, double clicking, and moving the mouse around.
"Learning Express" will be 4-5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25. Learning Express Library is a powerful tool available for free through the library, and this class will focus on the job search skills, computer courses, and online practice tests (SAT, ACT, etc.) available through Learning Express Library.
"Basic Computing" will be 1-2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, and is designed for those just learning to use a computer. Students will learn the basic parts of the computer and the desktop. Knowledge of how to use the mouse is required.
"Beginning Word" will be 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30. Students will learn the basics of word processing using Microsoft Word 2007, including creating and saving documents and using basic Word functions. Knowledge of how to use the mouse and the keyboard is helpful.
"Intermediate Excel" will be 10-11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, and will review the fundamentals of Excel and help students work with formulas and become familiar with sorting and organizing data. The instructor also will discuss tips for formatting spreadsheets to make them easier to create and read. Students also will be taught how to make professional-looking charts and graphs. It is important that students have a basic knowledge of Excel before taking this intermediate course.
Library hosts Lego Saturday
Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is to host the monthly "Lego Saturday" program 1-3 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Frost Kalnow Room.
The program is for all ages, and families are invited to stop by and create Lego designs with friends. The Library will provide Duplo Blocks for children ages 2-4 and Legos for ages 4 and up. Parents of young children are asked to attend.

Mohawk FFA hosts annual BBQ
SYCAMORE - The Mohawk FFA is to host its annual Fall BBQ Sept. 28. The event is to be at Mohawk High School, with food served 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dine-in and carry-out options are to be available.
The meal is to include half a chicken or two pork chops, cheesy potatoes, roll, applesauce, dessert and drink. There also is a combo meal that includes a quarter of a chicken and one pork chop. The meal is $8 and must be preordered.

Mohawk FFA students attend camp and retreat
SYCAMORE - Mohawk FFA students Meghan Chaffee, Kayla Draper, Ciara Long and Cassie Parsons attended FFA Camp Muskingum in Carroll County this summer. They spent a week at the camp, participating in team-building activities and leadership workshops.
The Mohawk Officer Team recently traveled to FFA Camp Muskingum in Carrollton for three days for an officer retreat. Mohawk FFA Officer Team is President Jarred Shellhouse, Vice President Deon Morter, Secretary Kayla Draper, Treasurer Lindsay Daniel, Reporter Emily Daniel, Sentinel Darby Walton, and student adviser Grant Price. The officer team worked together to complete the 2012 program of activities, Mohawk FFA goals, and mission statement, and explored their personal strengths and discussed their roles as leaders in the FFA chapter.
Heidelberg hosts 'State of Economy'
The Heidelberg School of Business announces the fall 2012 program of the "State of the Economy," offered in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. This event comes at a critical juncture of the global and national economy following the congressional testimony of the Federal Reserve System chair and Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
The event is to feature Kyle Fee, a senior research analyst in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Galu receives doctorate
Ioana Galu, a member of the faculty of the School of Music at Heidelberg University, received a doctorate of musical arts in contemporary music from Bowling Green State University Aug. 4. Galu, a native of Romania, has taught violin at Heidelberg since 2004.

TU professors accept research papers
Jonathan Appel, associate professor in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Tiffin University, together with his wife, Dohee Kim-Appel, an associate professor in the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Ursuline College, have accepted research papers at the Annual National Association of Forensic Counselors Conference in Las Vegas in September 2012.
Haan completes assignment in Spain
TU Marketing Professor Perry Haan completed a guest faculty assignment during the summer of 2012 at the United International Business School in Barcelona, Spain. Haan taught a business strategy class to marketing students in the school's MBA program from July 8 to Aug. 7.
His association with UIBS began when he served on the European Council for Business Education team that reaccredited the school in December 2011.
Findlay staff host workshop
FINDLAY - The University of Findlay's Cara Davies, Ph.D., assistant professor of health science, and Christine M. Denecker, Ph.D., associate professor of English, hosted a professional development workshop at the biennial convention for The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Aug. 11, in St. Louis, Mo.
During the interactive workshop, Davies and Denecker discussed how to harness technology for educational purposes and set appropriate boundaries for use of technology in the classroom. Through real-world examples of challenges faced today, participants of the workshop walked away with knowledge of how to effectively manage these new classroom challenges on a daily basis.

UF professor to offer Korean language class
FINDLAY Song-Chong Lee, assistant professor of religious studies and philosophy at The University of Findlay, is to offer a Korean language class to UF students and community members 5-6 p.m. Tuesdays during the fall semester. Those interested should join by Tuesday.
Students will learn an introductory level of the Korean language and brief history of the country and popular culture. There is a $30 student fee for learning materials.

Owens to host Fulbright scholar
FINDLAY - Owens Community College has been chosen by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, a division of the Institute of International Education, to participate in the internationally-recognized Fulbright Scholar-in-
Residence Program for the 2012-13 academic year. This marks the first time the institution has received the honor.
As part of the program, Farzona Rahimova, a native of Sughd, Tajikistan, will serve as the College's Fulbright Scholar and share her knowledge and expertise with employees and students in the School of Business during the fall and spring semesters on the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses. Additionally, she is to assist in developing new business courses with an international focus and serve as a guest lecturer in several academic disciplines.

Ensembles start at Terra State
FREMONT - Terra State Community College is announcing the beginning of music instrumental ensembles for the 2012-2013 season. This year is to feature many performances and offer opportunities for students and community musicians to improve their skills and play with others.

Terra State sees fall enrollment decrease
FREMONT - Many factors negatively impacted college enrollment state-wide, and Terra State Community College is no exception.
Official freeze-day statistics show Terra's student headcount at 3,172, a decrease of 9 percent, while full-time equivalency is at 963.1, down 10.6 percent.
The statistics became official Sept. 3, 15 days into the semester.
Changes in eligibility for federal Pell Grants, increased employment in many areas of the state and a general decline in high school graduation rates have negatively affected enrollment at colleges and universities across Ohio.

Defiance College joins wildlife preserve
DEFIANCE - The Diehl family of Defiance and Defiance College have entered into an arrangement that will turn over to the college management responsibility for the 250-acre Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary wildlife preserve.
Under this arrangement, Defiance College students studying restoration ecology and environmental studies will, under the supervision of Defiance College faculty, manage the preserve as a living laboratory, using it to further their research and also working to preserve and restore its natural habitat.
Red Cross to aid returning soldiers
As thousands of members of the Ohio National Guard's 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team begin coming home from their year-long deployment in Afghanistan, they will be facing many challenges as they return to their families, their jobs and their communities. The American Red Cross is aiding service members and families in dealing with the issues common to reintegration by offering Reconnection Workshops. The workshops are interactive modules designed to assist service members, veterans, their families and other loved ones in the transition home after a deployment.
Often, families find themselves feeling like strangers after months of separation. The means of communication at home are often different than those used during deployment. The American Red Cross of Hancock County is offering the Communicating Clearly module at the Armed Forces Family Network program at 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Red Cross office, 125 Fair St., Findlay. This module helps participants improve their communication skills to better manage the post-deployment period.

Fostoria resident honored as insurance speaker
COLUMBUS - Robert H. Green, Fostoria, was honored with a top speaker award during the Ohio Insurance Institute's awards banquet Aug. 28 at Westfield Center.
Green, a senior account executive of United Insurance Service Inc., Tiffin, was honored with this award for his participation in the association's Speakers Network program. OII speakers network members conduct presentations to high school students during business, consumer science, economics, math, social studies, career based invervention and other classes.
A prior OII award winner, Green was a pioneer award recipient in 1989, 1991, 1995, 2000 and 2012, and honored as a top speaker in 1988, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2005-2009 and 2011. In 1997, he received the OII chairman's award. Green is a member of Independent Agents of Ohio, a graduate of Wayne State Univertsity, he also has earned a master's degree from Bowling Green State University. Green is part president of the Fostoria Rotary Club, Fostoria Economic Development Corp., Fostoria Junior Achievement and Fostoria Area Chamber of Commerce.
Owens hosts blood drive
FINDLAY - Owens Community College Findlay-area Campus and the American Red Cross are to host a community blood drive 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Conference Center Room 111 on campus, which is located on Bright Road in Findlay. The blood drive is taking place in conjunction with Sept. 11 serving as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and not have given blood within 56 days prior to their donation. Individuals should feel well the day of the blood drive, be in general good health, and have a picture ID (preferably a driver's license). The blood drive is open to Owens employees, students and area residents.

Blood donations key to preparedness
The American Red Cross is among a coalition of organizations encouraging Americans to observe the 8th annual National Preparedness Month this September by doing simple things that make a difference when every second counts.
The Red Cross recommends three things most everyone can do to prepare for disasters or other emergencies: Get a kit. Make a plan. Be informed.
"The beauty is, those steps can be taken in advance, helping most everyone to be prepared," said Kathy Smith, Interim CEO for the Western Lake Erie Blood Services of the American Red Cross.
Supporting blood donation or giving blood also is critical to any community preparedness plan since hospitals need blood on the shelves to respond to patient need. Hospital patients need about 40,000 blood donations each day for ongoing or emergency medical needs. And when adequate supplies of blood are available every day of every week, the Red Cross can help ensure a swift response when and if blood needs intensify.
Blood is typically available to patients 24 to 48 hours from the point of donation because of the various steps involved in testing, processing, and distributing components like red cells, platelets and plasma. While many people roll up their sleeves during times of disaster, the key to a strong blood supply, Red Cross officials say, are steady and consistent donations throughout the year.
