MONROEVILLE- Monroeville swept Calvert, 25-18, 25-16, 25-11 Saturday, dropping the Senecas to 2-2.
Meridith Lucius led the Senecas with nine kills and eight digs, while Kaleigh Hendrix had 19 assists.
Calvert coach Greg Hendrix singled out the defensive work of Danielle Kontak as about the only positive he took from the loss.
"This one is going to put us back to the drawing board," he said. "We were building some momentum and ran into a well-coached Monroeville team that took us behind the woodshed and put it to us."
The coach said Calvert needs to bounce back.
"If we want to be a top-tier program, we need to put up a better effort against these caliber teams," he said.
New Riegel goes 2-0 at Willard
WILLARD - Kara Scherger slammed 22 kills over a pair of matches, and New Riegel improved to 7-0 with a 25-27, 25-15, 25-13 win over Marion Pleasant, and a 25-22, 25-12 victory over host Willard.
Scherger also had 18 digs and seven aces for the Blue Jackets, while Lauren Ladd recorded 17 kills, 15 digs and four aces. New Riegel's Taylor Arbogast registered 24 digs and 10 kills, while Cassandra Acree added 12 digs and dished out 37 assists. Morgan Noftz had 11 digs and 11 assists, while Alexis Kieffer had four blocks and Brittany Gillig had 12 digs.
Tigers fall in 3
ATTICA - Seneca East fell in three games to Colonel Crawford, 8-25, 25-12, 25-12.
The Tigers (2-7) got four kills and two blocks from Kristen Bowerman, while Cameil Ruffing had three kills. Mykayla Ruffing dished out eight assists.
Seneca East improved to 2-7.
Carey splits a pair of matches
COLUMBUS GROVE -Carey split a pair of matches Saturday, defeating Van Buren, 25-21, 25-14, then falling to host Columbus Grove 25-16, 25-17.
Hannah Tong led Carey with 19 kills and two blocks, while Shelby Seifert served six aces and added three blocks to go with 15 kills.
Sydney Wentling dished out 32 assists for the Blue Jackets, while Mackenzie Wentling, had 11 digs and Taylor Fletcher and Logan Johnson had 10 each.
Carey moved to 3-3 overall.
Chieftains fall twice
GALION - Hopewell-Loudon won a game in each of its matches Saturday, but suffered a pair of losses in Galion.
The Chieftains (1-7) lost to Galion, 16-25, 26-24, 25-22, then lost to Margaretta, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23.
In the first match, Hopewell-Loudon's Courtney Burns had 10 kills, 14 assists, 10 digs and three aces.
The Chieftains' Logan Frank had 10 kills and 15 aces, while Kassie Shaver notched seven kills and 11 digs. Racquel Hossler had 16 digs and 20 assists, while Shelby Sauber had 16 digs and Cassie Welly had five digs.
In the loss to the Polar Bears, Burns had 15 kills, 10 digs, 11 assists, while Frank had 10 digs and 10 kills. Shaver had 10 kills, 10 digs, with Hossler collecting 15 digs, 20 assists and three aces. Sauber had 15 digs, three kills, while Welly had 10 digs.
Mohawks have big day
FOSTORIA - St. Wendelin had a productive day Saturday, as it knocked off Fostoria, 25-23, 25-16, then defeated Gibsonburg, 25-14, 25-19.
The wins, the Mohawks' first of the year, pushed their record to 2-3.
In the win over the Redmen, St. Wendelin's Colleen Fondessy had a team-best 12 kills, while Adrienne Emerine recorded 14 digs. Catrina Lang added 11 kills, while Meghan Reiter and Allie Rutter each dished out 10 assists.
In the victory over Gibsonburg, Fondessy led the way with 10 kills, while Lang had seven. Emerine had 11 digs, with Georgia Kitchen recording 10.
Reiter had 16 assists for the Mohawks.
BC's Williams gets triple-double
BUCYRUS - It was 10s across the board for Maddie Central. The Buckette had 10 kills, 10 digs and 10 aces as Buckeye Central downed Wynford 25-14, 25-15, 25-12.
Sammi Marcum added 17 kills, six digs and two aces while Kendra Schultz had five kills and three blocks, and Jenna Delarber had three kills and four blocks.
Emily Weithman dished out 21 assists while Kilee Kimmel had 16 to go with six digs.
The Buckettes improve to 6-2.
