Devils down the Dogs

CAREY - Carey didn't appear to be showing Toledo Scott much mercy Friday night after three quarters.

So Mother Nature stepped in.

With Carey leading the Bulldogs, 48-0 after three quarters, lightning was spotted by the officials, causing a delay.

Minutes later, after the officials huddled with Scott coach Mike Daniels and Carey coach Todd Worst, the game was called, and the Blue Devils came away with a 2-1 record.

Despite some sloppiness, Carey dominated the play Friday night, starting when Alex Naeyart intercepted a Tre Brown pass on the Bulldogs' first possession and returned it to the Scott 9.

It was the first of four Carey picks, and it led to a six-yard Matthew Holsinger touchdown run on fourth down.

Add a 31-yard scoring scramble by Holsinger just before the half, and the rout was on.

Carey led 27-0, and Scott had had been held to just 50 yards of offense.

"It was just tough," said Scott coach Mike Daniels said. "We tried to get it going, and our quarterback was kind of injured, so he was a game-time decision for us. Once we started, we did some good things offensively, but then defensively, we started not wrapping up, things like that. It was a long night for us."

Holsinger led Carey on offense with 53 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Austin Tschanen also had a pair of rushing TDs.

"I don't think we played our best game, but we did some good things," Worst said. "Our defense played really well I thought, for the most part... it wasn't pretty, but it was a win."

Brandon Zechman had a pair of interceptions, including one that he returned for an apparent TD. The pick stood, but the touchdown was negated by a penalty.

On top of that, Zechman returned the second half kickoff to the Scott 22, setting up a a Tschanen touchdown, making it 34-0 in the third quarter.

"He's doing a really good job," Worst said of Zechman. "This is his second year starting, and he's really starting to turn it on, and knows his responsibility."

Alex Distel also had an interception for the Blue Devils.

Dylan Musgrave capped Carey's scoring with a five-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter.

Brown went 3 of 11 passing for 7 yards.
