Through the first four games, there wasn't much separation between Columbian and Bellevue. However, in the fifth and deciding game, Bellevue took advantage of Tornado errors to head home with a five-game Northern Ohio League victory 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 20-25, 15-6.
"It was a battle for both teams," Columbian coach Breena Lofquist said. "It came down to the last game. We made a lot of errors that cost us. Both teams played really hard and I look forward to playing them again."
Haley Sendelbach paced TC with 13 kills while Jourdan Hoffman delivered 24 assists. Michaela Sharlow added eight kills while leading the team with 15 digs.
Columbian falls to 1-1 (0-1 NOL).
New Riegel slips past BC in thriller
NEW WASHINGTON - Buckeye Central coach Bill Bonham called it a "battle of attrition."
Tuesday night's match between Buckeye Central and New Riegel also came down to defense, and the Blue Jackets had the edge there. They won the match 25-22, 25-17, 30-32, 20-25, 15-10.
"I give New Riegel credit, they frustrated our hitters," Bonham said.
New Riegel's trio of Brittany Gillig, Taylor Arbogast and Kara Scherger combined for 87 digs.
Scherger had 33 on her own, to go with 31 kills as New Riegel improved to 2-0 on the season.
Lauren Ladd had 16 kills to go with 20 digs for New Riegel, while Arbogast had 14 kills, Cassandra Acree had 49 assists and 15 digs, while Morgan Noftz had 12 digs and Alexis Kieffer had four blocks.
Buckeye Central's Brooke Karl had 24 digs, while Sammi Marcum had a huge game with 36 kills, 19 digs and three aces. Maddie Williams added 17 kills and 15 digs, while the Bucks' Kilee Kimmel had 12 digs and 33 assists.
Emily Weithman had 13 digs and 24 assists for BC, while Kendra Schultz six kills, five digs and two aces.
Bonham said his club wasn't really into the first game, and came out flat in the second. But the third game, in which BC had to score 32 times to extend the match, was different.
"That 32-30 game was some of the best volleyball I've seen in this area for a while now," he said.
Bonham said the Buckettes were forced to really rely on their outside hitters, but what hurt the Bucks in the final game was serving.
"We had three missed serves," Bonham said. "We had 10 points [in the fifth game] and couldn't put a serve down."
Still, Bonham said there were positives to take from the match.
"It was a great test for us, that's what we wanted," Bonham said. "This is our first five-game match in the last two years... that's what we wanted."
Balanced Senecas slam Van Buren
VAN BUREN - Calvert picked up its first win of the season routing Van Buren 25-9, 25-8, 25-19. Jordan Gase, Meridith Lucius and Amber Perry each had eight kills for Calvert (1-1).
Defensively Perry had three blocks and Lucius had 13 digs.
Kaleigh Hendrix dished out 27 assists while adding six kills of her own.
Mohawk's game less than Pleasant
SYCAMORE - Mohawk coach Eric Hoover blamed Tuesday's four-game loss to Marion Pleasant on errors.
And playing a pretty good team.
Pleasant defeated the Warriors, 25-22, 25-19, 14-25, 25-22 in Sycamore. Sarah Parker led the Warriors with 17 kills and 17 digs, while Ashley Parker had 30 assists and Lynsey Trusty had 20 digs.
"We didn't handle the ball well," Hoover said. "We made a lot of unforced errors. And we played a very good team. That's usually going to add up to a loss."
Julie Adelsperger had 10 digs and three kills, while Kasey Adelsperger had 10 kills and three digs for the Warriors. Aubrie Flood had five kills, while Clara Adelsperger had seven digs. Taylor McClain had 11 digs.
Carey slips in Arcadia
ARCADIA- Hannah Tong slammed 22 kills and had five aces and nine blocks, but Carey fell to Arcadia, 25-19, 25-19, 15-25, 25-23.
Sydney Wentling had 12 digs for the Blue Devils, who fell to 2-1.
Arcadia improved to 2-0.
Also for the Blue Devils, Shelby Seifert had three aces, six blocks and 11 kills, while Logan Johnson had 11 digs and Taylor Fletcher had 10 digs.
McComb sweeps St. Wendelin
MCCOMB - McComb breezed past St. Wendelin, 25-14, 25-16, 25-18 Tuesday.
St. Wendelin (0-2) had six kills each from Colleen Fondessy and Catrina Lang, Adrienne Emerine had 10 digs. Georgia Kitchen had six digs.
