Bird walk slated

Magee Marsh Wildlife Area is joining other places around the globe during the kickoff weekend of Pledge to Fledge by offering a beginning birder walk at 10 a.m. Aug. 25.

Participants should meet at the Bird Center at Magee Marsh for an easy walk. Binoculars are to be provided for people who need them. Birders are encouraged to bring a friend, relative, neighbor, co-worker, young person, or any other "non-birding" person.

Pledge to Fledge project is an effort to mobilize everyday birders across six continents to share their interest in birding with non-birders.

Deer hunts in 7

nature preserves

COLUMBUS - In an effort to control deer populations, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, in conjunction with the ODNR Division of Parks, is to coordinate gun and archery deer hunts at seven state nature preserves.

Applications are to be handled at the local level by individual preserve managers. Hunters must attend individual meetings where they can enter a drawing. Up to five entries per hunter are allowed with a $5 fee for each entry.

Hunters must possess a valid 2012-13 hunting license. Names are to be randomly drawn, and hunting pairs are to be assigned a two-week block of time. Orientation immediately follows the drawing.

In northwest Ohio, an archery hunt drawing is to take place at Goll Woods State Nature Preserve, 26093 CR F, Archbold, at 9 a.m. Sept. 1.

An archery hunt drawing is to take place at Lawrence Woods State Nature Preserve, 13278 CR 190, Kenton, at 10 a.m. Aug. 25.

Contact Ryan Schroeder at (419) 445-1775 for either drawing.

No Asian carp found in western parts of Lake Erie

After a week of intensive electrofishing and gill netting activities in Sandusky Bay, Maumee Bay and their main tributaries, officials have found no bighead or silver Asian carp in western Lake Erie.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service continue to work to assess the status of Asian carp.

Fish sampling took place in response to six water samples taken from Sandusky and north Maumee bays in August 2011 that tested positive for the presence of Asian carp eDNA. Additional eDNA sampling activities occurred July 30-Aug. 4, and those findings are to be announced in a few weeks.
