New Riegel prepares for opening day

NEW RIEGEL - New Riegel School is to have an open house 6-7 p.m. Monday. Elementary school supplies may be dropped off during the evening and grades 7-12 schedules will be available in the auditeria.

The first full day of classes is Wednesday, and Sentinel Career Center students report on Aug. 23.

Documentation distributed to students for parent review including the handbook, code of conduct and drug testing regulations are to be signed and returned by Aug. 24.

Jerry Jacoby has been scheduled for two assemblies Sept. 7. Grades K-5 are to hear "Real Character is no Accident!" and grades 6-8 are to hear "Junior High: The Best Ten Years of my Life."

Treasurer Jane Schalk reported revenues over expenditures for the fiscal year ending June 30 totaled $288,000. She said tax settlements during July were $150,000 for the first half real estate taxes and $186,000 from income taxes.

Since entering into contract with First Energy Solutions to supply and deliver retail requirements for 36 months beginning June 30, the district has saved $1,700.

Superintendent Elaine Nye informed school board members that AEP is to rebate the district $3,092.40 for participating in a light project to replace older lights with energy saving fixtures.

She led a discussion on the common core curriculum, saying students entering third grade in 2013-14 school year must score at least proficient on their reading assessment to be promoted to fourth grade. Each student in grades K-3 must have their reading skills assessed by Sept. 30, and if a student is reading below their grade level, a reading improvement and monitoring plan is to be

developed.

State Treasurer Josh Mandel's visit to the school last week was mentioned. The school district invested $500,000 in Mandel's Star Plus program July 9.

Athletic Board of Control liaison Jennifer Theis announced the first home game is a junior high volleyball game Aug. 27.

In other action, board members:

Established the class of 2018 fund.

Accepted grants totaling $122,516.59.

Approved student cleaners for the 2012-13 school year to be compensated at Ohio minimum wage.

Approved compensating Brian Backur, Jennifer Conner, Casey Losey and Dave Rombach $15 per hour for serving on the Local Professional Development Committee.

Approved compensating Saturday school monitors $50 for four hours.

Approved compensating intervention assistance team members $10 per hour.

Accepted the resignation of aide Cindy Scherger effective Aug. 5.

Approved the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center lists and updates of substitute teachers and aides.

Appointed Jennifer Theis as the delegate to the Ohio State Board Association annual meeting of the delegate assembly on Nov. 12, with Jeff Hohman as the alternate.

Entered into contract with Logan County Educational Service Center for a teacher for the visually impaired costing $6,960 plus $425 mileage and orientation and mobility services for $1,200 plus $425 mileage.

Entered into a contract with Integrated Wellness Solutions from Sept. 1, 2012, to Aug. 31, 2016 for the an employee wellness program.

Approved reduction of employees' portion of their medical insurance premium by 10 percent upon successful completion of the employee wellness program as determined by Integrated Wellness Solutions.

Approved the administrative salary schedule as presented.

Reduced cafeteria workers', dishwashers' and cashiers' hours by .25 hours per day effective at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

Employed Janet Ink as entry year teacher mentor for the next school year to be compensated per the negotiated agreement.

Approved New Riegel student/parent handbook for the 2012-13 school year.

Approved the Athletic Code of Conduct for next school year.

Approved the drug testing policy for next year.

Approved the cheerleading handbook for the next school year.

The Board of Education is to meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 10.
