Poker run to help

local shelter animals

The Hawgs for Dawgs Poker Run, a benefit for the Humane Society of Seneca County, is set for Saturday at Tiffin Amvets, 1909 S. SR 100.

Registration is 9-10 a.m. with bikes departing by 10:15 and returning by 4:30 p.m. The registration fee of $20 includes a T-shirt for the first 100 riders, dinner, door prizes and a poker hand.

Following the meal, Brazin Bull and Rookie Militia are to play music.

To sign up in advance, stop at the Humane Society, 2811 S. SR 100, during regular hours, 12:30-5:30 p.m. today through Friday.

Health conference planned at Elmwood

GREEN SPRINGS - Elmwood Health Care Center, 401 N. Broadway St., Green Springs, is to host a two-day Family Health Conference Aug. 24 and 25.

From 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 24 is a movie night with "Osmosis Jones," a family film about how the body works.

Austin Kimbrell is to give a program on chemicals in french fries and other fast food.

Participants ages 5 and older can learn what to do for fever, muscle aches, ear infections and other ailments and how to make mouthwash and toothpaste.

The cost is $5 per family.

The conference is to run 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Aug. 25. Registration is $25 in advance and $35 at the door, which includes lunch.

Topics to be covered include pain relief; the importance of sleep; reducing stress; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma; diabetes and hypoglycemia; hormones and obesity; the benefits of essential oils; the importance of water; skin and nails as health indicators; the relationship between emotions and disease; and more.

Spotlight on dolls, teddy bears at show

Sandusky River Valley Doll Club is to stage its 44th annual Doll and Teddy Bear Show and Sale Aug. 26 at Seneca County Opportunity Center, 780 E. CR 20.

Doors open at 10 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. Dealers and several local collectors are to have a variety of dolls, supplies and accessories for sale.

The public can vote on their favorite items in a display of fashion dolls through the years. Two dolls are to be raffled, and door prizes are to be awarded every 30 minutes.

Admission is $2, which includes one doll appraisal. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.

Arts show returns

PORT CLINTON - Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council is to present the 5th annual Appetite for the Arts Weekend Friday through Sunday at Liberty Aviation Museum, Port Clinton.

"An Evening with Amelia AIR ART" is planned 6-10 p.m. Friday in honor of the 75th year since the aviatrix's disappearance. This ticketed event is to provide a "sneak preview" of art by more than 60 artists, antique cars and vintage aircraft. Tickets are $25.

Museum admission is free 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday.

Six area veterans

to take Honor Flight

The next Northwest Ohio Honor Flight has been set for Aug. 29. Area World War II veterans registered for the trip include Army veterans Donald Fox of Sycamore and Paul Seebon of Fostoria; and Navy veterans John (Phil) Dicken and Jim Kizer, both of Tiffin, and William Clark and Robert Meyers, both of Bellevue.

CASA volunteer

training scheduled

CASA of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties is to begin the next training Sept. 12 for Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers.
