A man escaped with minor injuries after he was accidentally compacted and dumped into a garbage truck Tuesday.

According to reports from the Tiffin Police Department, a caller from Allied Waste reported Tuesday morning a man had climbed out of the top of a garbage truck and over the windshield after a worker picked up a dumpster at Dollar Tree, 658 W. Market St., and crushed the load. The worker had been driving away when the man appeared on the windshield.

The worker stopped, and the man told him he was from Missouri and needed a place to sleep. After the worker turned to get his phone, the man was gone.

Officer Joe O'Connor said the man, David W. VanFossen, 55, of Missouri, was later found in the 2200 block of West Market Street.

VanFossen, who suffered minor injuries to his nose and collar bone, declined treatment.

O'Connor said VanFossen, a transient, had been on his way to Georgia.
