Aug. 1-7 every year, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organizes World Breastfeeding Week to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support.
To mark this occasion for 2012, thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies/children across the world will gather in their communities at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 3 and 4 to take part in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations.
The local Big Latch On will take place at Oakley Park Aug. 3. Registration begins at 10 a.m.
The first Big Latch On took place in Aotearoa, New Zealand, in 2005 and now has become global. Introduced to Portland, Ore., in 2010 by Joanne Edwards, the the Global Big Latch On attracted 5,687 women participants. Organizers are aiming to involve even more women for this year's event.
