Airport project waiting on FAA funds to land

Seneca County Airport Manager Brad Newman would like to start a construction project at the airport, but told the Seneca County Board of Commissioners Tuesday he is waiting on funding from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The $255,000 project is 90 percent paid for by the FAA, but still awaits Congress to release the funds, he said.

"We should have had the project done last year," Newman said.

Newman did not say how soon he expected to receive federal funds.

The project has been bid out, but cannot move forward without money.

Newman said the priority is to work on the runway and clear a portion of nearby woods, which are owned by the county.

Board President Ben Nutter said he is wary about using local funds to improve the project until the county is more financially secure.

After the federal funds are approved to flow to the commissioners, 10 percent, or $25,000, of local revenue would be put toward the project.
