July 3, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

Eleven members of Fortress Baton and Pom of Tiffin have been practicing for months to perform this week in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

At midnight Sunday, they marched in the Fourth of July parade. It was the first Independence Day parade in the United States, and more than 10,000 spectators lined the streets to watch more than 100 floats and other units. Fortress also performed two 20-minute shows on the stage.

Monday, corps members performed a disco-themed show on the stage at Country Tonight Theater in Pigeon Forge. The show included baton twirling, chair routines, umbrella props and knife twirling. After the performance, members stayed to watch the Country Tonight show.

Wednesday, the girls are to present a patriotic show to entertain guests of the Lumberjack Feud show in Pigeon Forge.

They are to stay to enjoy a dinner and watch lumberjacks display their skills.

Members on the Tennessee trip include Jackie North, Megan Kirian, Lynsey Tyree, Cheyenne Fitch, Lilliana Ortiz, Jenna North, Abby Omler, Bailee Chaney, Kristin Fitch and special guest Mike Gibson. He and Jackie North are to perform a special disco routine to the music of "Stayin' Alive."

Another group of Fortress members has been preparing to compete July 29 at the Ohio State Fair. Fortress Baton is directed by Sandy Miller.
