Thoughts about our schools today:
We read Greg Elchert's letter about unfunded mandates killing our local school districts and as taxpayers, parents and grandparents, we agree with him. Going a step further, though, we've been saying for years that the state and federal governments need to get OUT of the education business and our local school districts should be the ones deciding what our children need.
We know times have changed, but the more the government and government officials mess with our educational system, the worse it becomes. It's past time to return our schools back to the local districts and communities. The less hands our tax dollars have to go through, the more money there will be left to spend on our children, and the more money the state and federal governments will save, if they eliminate the departments of education.
Education should be about what is best for our children, not about lawmakers and politicians' pocketbooks.
