Not long ago, during a conversation with a liberal acquaintance, they mentioned recently hearing some encouraging news concerning the economy. I couldn't resist and politely pointed out that the biased media reports what it wants the public to hear. Their terse reply was, "Well, anyway, it was good news." In other words, a lie is OK as long as it's what we want to hear. That brought to mind a favorite zinger from a speech by Ronald Reagan. He said, "It's not that our liberal friends are ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't true!"
How many countries have gone down the road to ruin because the people refused to remove their blinders or rose-colored glasses or couldn't pull their heads out of the sand and face the unpleasant realization that they had made a mistake until it was too late? And America made a biggie! Now we know, let's put this behind us and move on. Educate yourself on the candidates this time and above all, get out and vote, get your friends and relatives out to vote.
Reportedly, the Roman emperors, as the empire began to crumble, staged ever larger and more elaborate circuses and gladiator duels in the coliseum to distract the peoples' minds from the fact the barbarians were at the gates. That was around 476 AD, but human nature hasn't changed much. A full belly, a warm bed, a big-screen TV with a football game or an episode of "American Idol" or "Dancing with the Stars," and too many of us are content to let someone else worry about that unpleasant stuff. Don't be that person!
