A five-letter word

June 22, 2012
The Advertiser-Tribune

"Fracking" is a bad word, contrary to the headline on The Advertiser-Tribune's front page June 16. Though the National Research Council downplays the effect of fracking on earthquakes, more than a million environmentally concerned people, organizations and countries strongly oppose the practice for its proven harmful effects on nature and people. The NRC report says it is "important to consider potential repercussions" before drilling, but many other studies have convinced some states and nations to restrict areas of drilling and other nations (France, South Africa and Bulgaria) to ban it.
