Jobless rate edges down to 7.2 percent

At 7.2 percent for May, Seneca County's unemployment rate fell to its lowest point since it stood at 7 percent in October 2008, according to statistics from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The rate was down .6 percent from April's 7.8 percent, statistics showed.

Out of Seneca County's estimated 28,600 civilian workforce, 2,100 are unemployed, compared with April's 28,500 civilian workforce, where 2,200 were unemployed.

The civilian workforce is the sum of people employed and seeking work.

The surrounding county with the lowest unemployment rate was Hancock County at 5.9 percent. Ottawa County had the highest rate at 7.8 percent.

Hancock County dropped from 6.2 percent in April to 5.9 percent in May.

Ohio's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.3 percent and the national rate was 8.2 percent in May. These are down from Ohio's May 2011 rate of 8.8 percent and the nation's May 2011 rate of 9 percent.
